National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo: Episode 2

The National Museum of Nature and Science, (国立科学博物館, Kokuritsu Kagaku Hakubutsukan) located in Ueno Park, Tokyo, is one of Japan’s premier institutions dedicated to natural history and science. Established in 1877, it offers a comprehensive exploration of the natural world, scientific advancements, and technological innovations. The museum houses approximately 25,000 specimens and artifacts in two buildings: the Japan Gallery and the Global Gallery.

The large skull, powerful jaws with prominent teeth, and robust body structure, which are characteristic of the Tyrannosaurus rex (T-Rex) species.

In Basement 1-3 featured the most anticipated mysterious evolution of dinosaurs. I was totally mesmerised, shocked and delighted to experienced this ancient artifacts.

Today, reptiles stand birds are quite different animals. Studying dinosaurs however bridges the gap between the two. There are countless mysteries including the origin of dinosaurs, their increase in size, diversification, and their extinction. can we learn from the silent testimonies of fossils.

Based on the epic themes “History of the Universe”, “History of Life”, and “History of Humankind”, travel back in time and experience 13.8 billions years of history through specimens, documents, and videos. It is the centerpiece that links the exhibition halls of the Global Gallery.

The skeleton shows the species of Ankylosaurus. This dinosaur is identifiable by its distinctive features, including a heavily armored body covered in osteoderms (bony plates), a broad, low-slung body shape, and a prominent tail club.

This dinosaur is easily recognizable by its large frill and three horns, which are clearly visible in the skeletal structure shown. The name “Triceratops” itself means “three-horned face”.

Lokiceratops rangiformis is an extinct genus of centrosaurine ceratopsian dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous period, discovered in Montana, United States.

Pachycephalosaurus This dinosaur is known for its distinctive thick, dome-shaped skull, which is evident in the skeleton’s head structure.

Camarasaurus was a large, plant-eating sauropod dinosaur known for its long neck and tail.

EdaphosaurusThis prehistoric reptile is known for the distinctive sail-like structure on its back, formed by elongated neural spines extending from the vertebrae, that lived during the Early Permian period, approximately 300 to 250 million years ago.

This skeletons of a Tylosaurus (a mosasaur, a type of marine reptile) and a Basilosaurus (an ancient whale, a type of marine mammal), not dinosaurs.

The skeleton, particularly the large, curved tusks and overall size, are characteristic features of a Columbian mammoth, an extinct species of mammoth that inhabited North America during the Pleistocene epoch.

This is a model of a Pterosaur skeleton, specifically a flying reptile from the Mesozoic Era.

This skeleton represents a large land mammal, likely a giraffe, as part of the museum’s exhibits on the history of life and evolution on Earth.

This displays skeletons of ancient whale ancestors, specifically Pakicetus and potentially another early cetacean. These fossils represent transitional forms in the evolution of whales from land-dwelling mammals

the skeleton of an Irish Elk, also known as the Giant Deer (Megaloceros giganteus).

the skeleton of a Bison latifrons, also known as the giant bison or long-horned bison

The skeleton in the image is a Parasaurolophus. From the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 76.5–73 million years ago.

For your kind words

Totally agreed with you, Yes must recommended place. Thank you for your comment.

Amazing post @Trishatishu, very informative museum collection.
