North Eastern part of India is famous for its natural scenic beauty. This region is very rich for beautiful rivers, adventurous hills, national parks, waterfalls and for many more natural resources. Today I am going to explore a hill top near to my hometown. As the title of this story, Nakkati Hills Peak Point is one of the peaks of Nakkati hill. This is located in Bongaigaon district of Assam, India and 19 KMs far from the district head quarter Bongaigaon as well as New Bongaigaon(NBQ) railway station. There is another convenient way from Boitamri(NH-17) to the hill; which is almost 16 KMs distance. Most of the route can be accessible by car, SUV or motorcycles and rest 3KMs need to walk before reaching the foothills.
With four of my friends I visited this hill on a Sunday few months back. We had started our journey morning at 8AM to avoid hot temperature of the noon; though it was maximum 30 degree celsius at that time and maximum temperature reached 34-36 degree celsius during summer in my place. After half an hour journey we stopped our car near the bank of Tuniya river and started walking by crossing the bamboo bridge over the river. Nakkati is a local name in Assamese language which means “Cutting Nose”. There are so many local stories related to the hill and people of the locality believe Maa Maharani (Goddess Parvati) had mythological relation with this hill; they also built a temple of the goddess in the village.
The altitude of the peak point is approximately 429 meters from sea level, for a moderate climber it requires one to one and half an hour to reach the top from the foothills. After covering half of the path, there is a plain space where local villagers framed a bamboo hut which is like a base camp for taking rest & foods for the climbers. We had taken rest for half an hour and discussed various topics specially about the surroundings, history of the hill, government aids etc. with Mr. Upen Nath, he is one of the owners and care taker of the bamboo hut. There is a stream near the hut and we made ourselves fresh as recommended by Mr. Nath for its natural cold & fresh water. We resumed our climbing and before leaving him we requested him to prepare foods for us so that we could have in our return journey.
After climbing the rocky hills we reached the top at around 11.30AM. Believe me, we forgot all our tiredness by reaching the peak point, it is incredible indeed. We could view all the surrounding places, rivers from there. Some of the rocks are flats but most of the rocks are much erected and we need extra precaution measures to climb them. We met four-five groups of climbers who had come from different parts of Assam.
This place becomes very popular in social media from last few years. People like to compare it with the #McAfee Knob of United States. We also opened our eyes surprisingly for the mesmerizing scenic beauty of the peak point and we said ourselves that Mother Nature given all the ingredients to make it beautiful and adventurous in every aspect like McAfee Knob.
As commitment, Mr. Nath served us lunch in banana leaf during our return and given his contact details so that he could prepare more next time as we discussed with him to planning night stay over there in coming days.
