While touring the Telangana, I experienced a lot about investigation of ancient and faded monuments of historical importance. Nagunur Fort in Karim Nagar was explored and after accessing the site I was thrilled. It’s popularly known as Nagunur only.

Nagunur Fort, previously it was known as Nagaroor, which remain alive with the rise of Kakatiyas after the reign of Vemluwada Chalukyas, Kalyani Chalukyas for five centuries from 8th-13th centuries and it was a popular centre of faith, a religious centre, a political centre, a spiritual centre also as a capital of morality, reaches to its extinction. This great capital turned to ruin which was having about 400 temples and now only three are surviving. Among these three, two are already in ruins and one is about to be ruined, situated on Choppadandi- Arnakonda Road opposite to the Prathima Institute Of Medical Sciences and close to the Karimnagar Railway Station.

One Lord Shiva’s temple close to the highway is under restoration by Archaeological Survey Of India and a yard housing the ancient stone sculptors and segments, but no significant informations are provided at the site for visitors by the Archaeological Survey of India about the fort and the Shiva temple. Two kms inside the Village Nagunur is situated, majority of the peoples were unknown about the existence of the Fort. A Jama Masjid of Nizam’s era and close to the Village Center, I found a grand temple facing to the North built on a raised platform with three sanctums all are dedicated to Lord Shiva, carved, sculpted and decorated beams, pillars, ceiling, door frames, dance floor, depiction of images of musicians, dancers with Mridangam an essential instrument accompanied in Carnatic music also known as the King Of Percussion and considered as a Divine Instrument. Ignorance of the evidence of a glorious past of this capital, brought in a very bad condition, it won’t be able to bear a rainy season and another just opposite to this temple which is almost damaged, East facing with pillars, dance floor and a sanctum and ceiling and few ramparts. Archaeological Department has marked all the stone structure but here also no historic informations are provided.

Golden history of this great city, can be estimated by looking at these ramparts. Architecture is quite similar to Nagara Style may be Vesara or Bhumija style mostly was popular during the reign of Kakatiya. All temples which I could see are having the architecture and decorative carvings quite influenced by the Ramappa temple, all temples were built on raised platforms. Were built by red stone and some segments with black granite. As I didn’t find the sight as Nagunur Fort on map so I considered this listing quite appropriate. Indeed it’s Nagunur Fort.

I was wondered by this visit and I was surprised about the unawareness of the locals. It’s a major attraction among the history buffs wanderers soulseekers heritage art and architecture lovers.
