My wet and adventurous trip to Hat Yai, Thailand

I have to be honest with my readers and tell that my trip to Hat Yai Municipal Park was not planned at all. I had only two days stay in Hat Yai last week, the weather was not nice and as I don’t know Thai it was a little bit difficult to travel around the city. Before giving some tips I would like to share my own experience which was a little bit crazy. The day I visited the park it was raining. Therefore, the weather did not stop me to have a picnic near the lake. It either stopped me to climb up the hill to the top at night and enjoy the night city view. As it was my only opportunity to explore the park I was determined to see everything there before I leave. I wish the tips below will help you to organize your trip to the park properly and not to miss any interesting experience there.

Let me tell you first where Hat Yai city is: It is in the southern part of Thailand, near the Malaysian border. There is actually a lot to do in this city and if you are interested to know more just let me know about it in the comments section. Hat Yai Municipal Park is only about 6km from the city centre. You may take a tuk tuk or so called rickshaw which may cost around 120 baht or book a grab car with a similar price to get to the park. The park itself is huge and there is a lot to do there so make sure you have enough time to explore the whole park. Here is my o do list in the park:

  1. You should definitely have a picnic near the lake. You may simply buy food near the park and find a seat near the lake. If it is not raining than having is the picnic is one of the best things you can do there.
  2. Once you relax and enjoy your time near the lake it is time to hike the hill up to the top. You will find an amazing view of the whole city and not only. There are temples and religious statues on the top that will surely amaze you. You can hike or take a cable car to the top, but if you ask me then you should definitely walk to the top.
  3. Once you explore the top of the park it is time to try to learn Thai square dance. In the evening you will meet many Thai people from different age groups dancing together in the park. It is a must do while you are in the park.
  4. My last tip for you is to have fun and enjoy your time regardless the weather, language barriers, tiredness or any other reason.

Before quitting always remember you might never come back there, you might never get a second chance to explore and to experience things that you are almost to give up on.

@Hasmik I really like your tips, they are useful and helpful for us, Local Guides. I’m Thai but I haven’t been to Hat Yai Municipal Park. I love the way you think and the way you did, you were there and you never know if you will have a chance to come back or not, so you did have a picnic and you did walk to the top. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us.

Hi @Hasmik ,

Thanks for sharing your great tips and advice. I haven’t been to Thailand yet, but I’ve always wanted to go there. So many friends have already been and are all so amazed by the place. How long did you stay there? Did you travel anywhere else around Thailand? I’m very curious to see Bangkok, did you manage to stop there?

Firstly, I would like to thank for the comment @DanniS . I’ve been living and working in Thailand for only 2 months now and I have visited Bangkok, Trang, Surat Thani, Hat Yai and some small beaches around the country. Bangkok is just amazing. Everything here is so different and new to me. People, culture, food, atmosphere, public transport. I highly reccomend you to visit to Bangkok because it is the heart of Thailand. I will share about my Bangkok travelling experience and tips very soon. Hope it will be useful and will inspire you to visit to Thailand.
