My Top 5 Free Museums in Washington DC, USA

Washington, D.C., the political capital of the United States, is the city where the White House, US Capitol, Lincoln Memorial Hall, and many other monuments stand. However, what I love the most about this city are the vast museums they have. And what makes it even more lovable? All these museums are free for entrance! “Free”, what a magical word, right? I haven’t seen this word on museums’ entrance for such a long time after my London trip.

The F word (Free, of course, lol) isn’t the only thing makes Washington DC’s museum campus great, but also the vast cover of collection they have, from science, nature, history, culture, to art. It’s definitely a can’t-miss destination for all museum lovers. And in today’s article, I’d share my 5 favorite museums in Washington, D.C., and they are all FREE!

  • National Portrait Gallery
What would you expect? Lots of portrait paintings? Well, of course, but it’s actually more than that. Besides the portraits of American politicians, artists, and celebrities, this museum is also a gallery for performing arts and visual arts. And don’t miss the glass roof courtyard which is a perfect place to rest feet after a long walk and have some calm time alone or with companies.

  • Sculpture Garden
The full name of Sculpture Garden is actually National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, so it’s an addition to the National Gallery of Art. However, some people may notice that the National Gallery of Art isn’t on this list. The reason is that I didn’t make my visit there so I’d leave it to you. Back to the track, as the name, sculpture garden, this place is an open-air sculpture gallery, with amazing artworks by numerous world-wide distinguished artists.

  • Hirshhorn Museum
This museum is designed in an open cylinder shape, which makes the architecture of the museum itself become an attraction and the experience of walking in the museum appreciating artworks unique. As an embracer of international modern and contemporary art, Hirshhorn Museum has its own sculpture garden, and it’s right across the one mentioned above, National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.

  • National Air & Space Museum
For those who love aircraft or spacecraft, it’s a must-visit place. Like many kids, I’ve dreamed of being an astronaut, only until I found out that I don’t really have the gift in mathematics and physics. However, it doesn’t affect my interests in astronomy and space. After all, it’s hard not to be amazed by the mysterious universe we live in.

  • Renwick Gallery
Definitely a surprise in my museum visits. It wasn’t on my visiting list when I was planning the trip, however, it becomes one of my favorite museums in Washington DC and I feel so lucky that I didn’t miss it. This place is right across the White House but not many people recognize it so still a hidden gem. Unlike its historical exterior look, the exhibitions more focus on contemporary art. And they have some incredible medium or large scale art installations.

Voila! These are my 5 favorite museums in Washington DC. Some of you may notice that museums listed above are mostly about contemporary art or modern art. Exactly, since I do have preferences in these arts. So, hope you enjoyed it!

Do you like visiting museums? What’s your favorite museum/gallery?

Another amazing post, @ChanneLing !

I have been to two of these and loved them (The Air & Space Museum & The Portrait Gallery). The Renwick Gallery looks like a must-try on my next visit to D.C. Love the burning man installation! My favorites are still the Museum of Natural History and the National Geographic Museum!

Hi @JordanSB ,

Thank you! Yes, the burning man installation is super cool! Hope I could have the chance to witness the festival in person (though might be difficult XD). Museum of Natural History is another great museum, I didn’t put it on the list since there’re only 5 spots lol. My favorite Museum of Natural History is the one in New York City, American Museum of Natural History since it’s the film place of “Night at the Museum” lol.

Also, the National Geographic Museum looks fun, pity that I didn’t have the chance to visit it. There are just so many great museums in Washington DC. Hope I could spend more time and explorer more museums there, maybe my next east coast trip!

Hi @ChanneLing ,

Thanks for this wonderful post. Which one was your most favorite of all? I would love to visit the National Air & Space Museum, wow! Also Hirshhorn looks pretty amazing with its architecture and all. You mention they are free? Are they free all the time or on some days? That is so great.

In Europe, most museums are with an expensive entrance fee that you almost don’t want to go because of that and not many people can, which is sad.

Hi @DanniS ,

Thanks for the comment! It’s hard to choose a favorite from them all, but if I’d choose one that I’d visit again, then it’d be Hirshhorn since I love modern and contemporary art lots, and the cylinder shape space just impressed me so much.

And yes, the museums listed above are all FREE 24/7 (not open 24/7 though). Actually, there’s an institution called Smithsonian, and all museums/ galleries in DC area and a zoo are free for entrance. Isn’t it amazing? You could find the list of free museums and more information about it on their website.

Yes, I totally agree. The museum entrance fee could be too expensive sometimes. That also makes me love London more since they also have vast FREE museums, including the world-class British Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Tate Modern, and more. As for Paris, national museums such as the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Centre Pompidou, etc. are free for students under 26, which is fantastique and is kinda like to encourage people to visit these places as young as possible XD. A funny thing, since most toilets aren’t free in Paris, and the public ones could be quite dirty, sometimes I’d go to museums to use their restrooms when I was a student lol. Do you know if there’s any other cities or countries have this kind of offer for visitors?

Back to expensive entrance fees, I understand that institutions and museums couldn’t run these places for free since they need money to maintain, to preserve. and to operate the place. But sometimes it’s so expensive that people couldn’t afford, which exactly as you said, is really sad. That’s also parts of the reasons why I’m into street art lol.

By the way, in Taipei (the city I currently live in), for example, the entrance fees for some museums are pretty low (only around 1-2 euros) for the permanent exhibition. Then, if it’s a special exhibition (like collections from other great museums or else), the price would then be higher at 5~12 euros. And some museums have special discounts for local citizens. Is it the same case in your city/country?

@ChanneLing I didn’t know this about London, good to keep in mind! I know some cities have this free day on a Sunday.

I remember in Florence they have the last Sunday of the month free in all museums and you can expect the lines were huge but it was totally worth it. We visited Uffizi Gallery with my mom and there were a lot of amazing famous paintings and of course, the building itself is breathtaking!

I think the Louvre in Paris, also has a free entry day on the first Saturday of the month. Things like these really help tourists and even local people to go and see some culture.

When I was in Amsterdam, I wanted to visit the Van Gogh Museum, but tickets were really expensive in my opinion that I didn’t go.

Yes, I remember many museums are having a free day a month. @DanniS Also, there’s International Museum Day. Thousands of museums open their doors for free to celebrate it. Alors, why can’t every day be like Museum Day? XD

As for the Van Gogh Museum, I made the same choice as you. And the ticket price of the Rijksmuseum is expensive too. I think I probably skipped all the museums in Amsterdam because the only place I eager to visit at that time was Anne Frank House, but the queue in front of it was way too long so I didn’t make it.

Museum and monument tickets really play a large share of my travel expense. I always have voices combating in my head saying that “Go for it! It’s once in a lifetime experience!” or “Ahh! It’s too expensive! Why don’t you save it to eat something nicer! How about the fancy resto we passed by yesterday?”. I guess that’s the same struggles for everyone?

My love for museums has now increased … Thanks to you

In India, there are too many museums, as different museums cater to different cultures. Also, here we have museums based on some unique concepts - like Brain Museum, Insect Museum, etc.

Currently, I’m preparing such a list on Google Maps and soon will share with all.

Cool! I’ve never been to a brain themed museum. Is it like a natural science educational institution? Can’t wait for your list and to learn more about museums in India!

Hi @ChanneLing ,

It’s true that museums are most awesome place on Earth. They make me go back into that particular time-zone. They make me feel to talk with those erstwhile objects.

Brain Museum in India is basically under NIMHANS, which is an autonomous institution under the Government of India. It is educational & research institution. It offers academic programs in neuroscience, public health, psychiatry and mental health.

The museum promotes the interest among kids and young medical students who want to take career in this field.

As far as the museums list is concerned, I’ll share it soon and will tag you too.

Hey @Tushar18 ,

That sounds pretty cool! Natural science museum is my favourite go-to when I was a child, though not long after I found it’s not easy to be a scientist lol. It’s great that we have these institutions planting interests of science in kids’ hearts.

Please do. Can’t wait to learn more about museums in India!
