My Top 4 Popular South Indian Vegetarian Breakfast Dishes

Hi everyone,

I love vegetarian dishes. There are lots of vegetarian dishes which I love to try everytime. Let me share with you some of the my top 4 popular vegetarian breakfast dishes which you might be knowing.

Idly with Vada

Idly and Vada is a great combination. Idly is made by steaming a batter of rice. Idly will be served with Sambar. I can’t think of Idly and Sambar without Vada. They are super delicious when you have Idly and Sambar with Vada. Idly on one hand is a very healthy dish. I got to know that having Idly is good for weight loss too. My weakness is that I sometimes feel difficult to have Idly and Sambar without Vada. I remember having it in Hotel Aaryaas in Vellore and it’s one of favorite veg hotels to have Idly and Vada.

Poori

Poori is one of my favorite veg dishes which I love to eat everytime. It is deep-fried made from wheat flour. It taste so yummy. It will be served with potato masala or with vadakari in my place. Poori is usually a breakfast dish and also we can have it as a snack. Let me tell you one thing. If I visit any hotel and I am not sure which dish is good there, I will go by ordering Poori since somewhere in myself I believe Poori will come delicious if served at any time, anywhere. The Hotel Shanthi Sagar is one of my most favourite places to have Poori. I have had Poori to countless number for so many weeks during my classes few years ago. If I happen to go nearby, I will sure try to have Poori and will come back.

Parrotta

Parrotta is made from all purpose floor/maida. It taste so yummy. This is my second most preferred breakfast dishes next to Poori. Some Vegetarian Hotels serve Parotta so great like The Hotel Sri Kandha Vilas Dosa Camp in Bengaluru. They serve Parrotta at evening time only and they have other breakfast dishes on morning. There is a something special in their Parrotta. Parrotta will be served usually with Khurma.

Dosa

Dosa is made from drained rice. Dosa is really one of the mosly preferred breakfast dishes in South India. There are various varieties of Dosa served in Vegetarian Hotels such as Rava Dosa, Ghee Dosa, Masala Dosa, Plain Dosa, etc. You can also have Vada with Dosa. Dosa is served in breakfast and also can be taken as snack. The Rava Dosa which I recently had in Soundarya Hotel at Chikmagalur was delicious.

I hope you like this post. Let me know in the comments which is your favorite Vegetarian dish.

Stay Safe. Happy Guiding!

Nice listing @SalmaanN

The preparations that you have captured look delicious and presentable, especially the cone dosa.

I somehow feel that whereas Idli and Dosa are light for digestion parotta and poori are a bit heavy. What do you think?

Hi @TusharSuradkar bro,

That’s very true. Idly and Dosa is very light especially the Idly. I prefer Idly in case if I have to travel early morning and Dosa too. I remember my friend once said to me that it’s difficult for someone to complete his breakfast in less than 3 Dosa  . Thanks bro.

Hehe. Thanks for your comments, @taihsien . Would be great if you could share any dish photos.

Hello @SalmaanN ,

Thank you for sharing all this detailed information and beautiful photos with us, everything looks very delicious!

I’m a huge Indian food lover and the four breakfast meals look amazing, I would love to try each one of them.

You have associated each dish with a hotel, are these meals available in normal restaurants or places where one can have a breakfast? From my personal experience, usually eating at a hotel is a bit expensive! Is it the case in India as well?

The parrotta reminded me of a Moroccan dish called milwi. It looks completely the same and people there have it either for breakfast or in the afternoon along with a cup of tea with mint.

Thank you so much for your kind words, @BorrisS . I am glad to know that you like the dishes. These are the most common dishes available in South Vegetarian Hotels and I am sure you will get it almost at all hotels. It is very inexpensive here. In a budget friendly restaurant, it will be around $1 (around ₹70) which I can have either 1 Dosa, or a set of Poori, or a set of Parotta or a set of Idly with Vada. Thanks again, Borris.
