My Food Exploration (Part 2) - Gujarati Food

Hello foodie Local Guides

In my food exploration, I always love to try and experiment new types of cuisines.

I have foodie family and friends who make it easy to visit on new places and share delicious food :yum:

Gujarati cuisine in general has it’s own variants, some are spicy, some are sweet and sour.

My family loves to have Kathiyawadi Food which is mainly known for the spiciness and and use of Millets

Kathiyawadi restaurant (Dhaba) are usually found on the highway side towards gujarat, but I discovered some of them nearby on google maps

I visited two Kathiyawadi Dhaba/ restaurants and tried different dishes

Shree Khodiyar Kathiyawadi Dhaba & Khodiyar Farsan

Hotel New Kathiyawad Bhayavadar wala

Kathiyawadi food mainly consists of potatoes, tomatoes, onion, garlic and brinjal based vegetable and curries.

I visited with my family and got a chance to try many dishes.

  1. Baingan bharta / Oro ( Roasted and mashed Brinjal)

This is one of the most famous dishes and a must try in kathiyawadi restaurant.

The big Brinjal is roasted, peeled and mashed, then cooked with oil, spices, onion, garlic and tomatoes.

It has a smoky flavour because of roasting.

  1. Papad chrui (Crushed papad)

It is a starter or sider dish, the papad is roasted or fried and crushed and mixed with spices, onions and peanuts. It is crunchy and spicy.

3.Khichadi Kadhi

Khichadi is a rice based dish it is mainly a mixture of dal (lentils) and rice cooked with salt turmeric and tempered with green chilli, mustard seeds, ghee (clarified butter), garlic

Or served plain.

Kadhi is a soup like dish made using curd and thickened using chickpea flour, the whole spices added in it adds a magical taste to it making it spicy, sour and mild sweet.

  1. Dahi tikhari

It is a curd based curry, chopped onions and tomatoes and garlic are sauteed and mixed with curd cooked with spices, it has a Spicy and Tangy flavour.

  1. Roti / Rotla (flat breads)

Fulka roti is whole wheat flat bread, Rotla are made using rice flour or Millets, Jowar and Bajra Rotla are widely popular with the curries.

  1. Pickles and chutney

Indian food is incomplete without chutney and pickle

Kathiyawadi food has different types of pickles made using raw mango, vegetables, green chilli and garlic.

Some are sweet, some are spicy and some are a blend of sweet and spicy

The best part I liked on this place was a big pickle box where there were varieties of pickle available

  • Chundo ( sweet and spicy raw mango pickle made using sugar and chili powder)
  • Gud keri ( sweet raw mango pickle made using jaggery)
  • Aathela marcha ( pickled green chilli)
  • Garlic pickle
  • Raw mango pickle ( spicy and tangy)
  • Garlic chutney (made using garlic and red chilli)

7.Sambharo / Salad

Sambharo is made using cabbage. It is semi cooked or stir fried tempered with mustard seeds, green chilli, salt and turmeric. It is served like a salad.

Apart from that raw onion, cucumber, carrots, Tomatoes are sliced and served complimentary as salad.

  1. Jalebi / Rabdi

Every food is incomplete without dessert, Jalebi is a very popular dessert option in kathiyawadi restaurant. It is piping hot and made in ghee, served plain or with rabdi ( condensed full fat milk based sweet)

  1. Kathiyawadi Biryani

This was a very unique dish we tried here, it is a rice dish made using lots of vegetables and spices.

It has a different taste compared to the normal biryani, and has more of a garlic and chilli based flavour.

There are places where they serve Thali which consists of small portions of curries, veggies, salad, pickles and bread like a combo.

I think the best Gujarati food i had was in a restaurant called “Rajdhani” in Artesia California. Thanks for sharing @FalguniP such a delicious post.
