My First DC Lunch: Tasting Magic at Founding Farmers

If you’re looking for a spot that perfectly blends a cosy atmosphere with high-quality, fresh ingredients, Founding Farmers is a must-visit. It’s consistently one of the top Google Maps recommendations for Northwest Washington and Foggy Bottom, and after my first lunch in DC, I can see why!

I was struck by their menu book. It is so incredibly detailed and well-crafted you can tell they put a lot of heart into explaining where their food comes from. They even have a gift shop on-site, which is perfect if you want to take a piece of the “farm” home with you!

Sharing the “Brie Apple Farm Bread”

The three of us started with the Brie Apple Farm Bread. I’ll be honest—I wouldn’t usually have picked this, but I’m so glad we did!

  • The Flavour: It’s a surprisingly nice mix of sweet and savoury with a hint of vinaigrette tartness.

  • The Texture: The brioche was perfectly grilled with a beautiful “crispiness” and crunch.

  • The Verdict: The cheese wasn’t overpowering, making it a fresh and light way to start the meal.

Zesty Sips

My sister tried the Strawberry Margarita, which came with a classic sugar rim. It was packed with real fruit and very zesty. Warning: it’s quite strong, but she highly recommends it!

The Main Course

We certainly didn’t go hungry! For our mains, we enjoyed:

  • Bucky’s Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich: A spicy favourite.

  • Southern Fried Chicken & Waffles: A classic comfort dish done right.

  • Meatloaf: Hearty, flavourful, and exactly what you want from a farm-to-table kitchen.

The service was excellent, but the food stole the show. It actually turned into a very “silent dinner” because we were all so focused on enjoying every mouthful! We left with nothing but empty plates all around. Well done, Founding Farmers! We’ll be back next time.

Local Guide Tip

If you’re in the Foggy Bottom area, definitely “pin” this location on your map. It’s the perfect place to get the family together for a meal that feels both high-end and home-cooked.

Great post!! I love using Google Maps to find the best Fried Chicken & Waffles in every neighborhood. When you’re looking for a new dinner spot, do you rely more on the “Top Rated” filter or do you prefer looking at the most recent “Updates” photos from other locals?

HELLO!!! Unfortunately, I was just in the DC area last May and didn’t know about this. Sigh! Next time! Check out our announcement for the FIRST USA meet-up in Key West! KEY WEST USA Meetup 2026 June 4th-6th

Hello @jasmines Thank you so much. I am happy you like the post. I am also a big fan of chicken and waffles, and that was my meal. I filter the distance first, then the top reviews, and check the photos. Sometimes, just distance and I will decide. Keep an eye on Google Maps for some cities as well. Gemini has also helped me prepare for my trips and meals.

Sorry, but you will absolutely love it when you visit DC. This will be a fantastic meetup. I hope to be in the United States by then, and I will definitely join. @Denise_Barlock I’d like to host a virtual DC Tour meetup next week, and would you like to co-host?

It’s to show DC some landmarks and places I have visited, and things to share about the city, including tips for first-time travellers. @Denise_Barlock

@AlphaSays I’m not so sure how to help you? But I’ll be happy to attend. I’m going to be cohosting this meetup. Maybe join, and we can talk afterwards? [Virtual] United States, February 07, Lighthouses In Michigan

@AlphaSays When are you planning to do this? I don’t have much experience in DC, but I recently spent a month there doing some sightseeing.

Friday, 27th February 2026. No, that’s fine I equally don’t have much DC experience. @Denise_Barlock You can simply select 3-4 places you visited and share your experience.

@AlphaSays I’m afraid that I can’t make the 27th. I’m going on a cruise on the 23rd. Sigh. Sorry!
