My first attempt at creating a travel infographic

Infographics have always fascinated me. This pictorial method of conveying information is both compact and powerful especially in fields like business, technology and travel.

Background and Inspiration

After returning from a 5 day trip of colorful Rajasthan in India :india: I began uploading pictures to social media to share with friends and to Google Maps writing reviews when at the same time the idea of summarizing my trip into an infographic struck me. I realized not possessing the high-end skills of an artist or illustrator. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a shot and the outcome is as below:

I started with the following scheme and theme in mind:

  1. Show cities with a small orange circle.
  2. The travel path with a thick blue dotted line with an arrow at the destination.
  3. The travel mode with an icon - like car, rail, flight, etc.
  4. At least one clipart depicting the special feature of the place.
  5. Date of travel to each destination.

Besides this the other prominent features are:

  1. North direction indicator symbol.
  2. A larger map of the region showing where my area of travel was confined.

Tools Used

I decided to use Paint.Net which is a free program having simple tools like MS Paint yet powerful like adobe Illustrator. This program has transparency support for PNG files besides the ability to organize work with layers which are the two most prominent tools necessary to create impressive artwork. Besides this Paint.Net also features a variety of photo touch up tools and color processing filters which can come in handy.

The Process

I picked up a stock image of the map of the region and started drawing lines and shapes on top of it after marking the places by looking up locations from Google Maps. The clipart for each place is either a free stock photo picked from Google Search or my photos which I resized and processed using Paint.Net to match with the hues and tones of the infographic.

I played around and experimented a lot until I was satisfied with the result. I finalized the infographic for my trip and posted it online.

If you have any further questions about creating impressive travel infographics or would like to share samples of your own, kindly respond in the comments below. Until then…

I only heard of Rajasthan in the famous soap opera; “Jodha & Akbar”!

Thanks for sharing your time and experience with us!

Thanks  @Ewaade_3A for your words of appreciation.

Unfortunately, that film you saw is a distorted version of real history.

I’d recommend you refer to Wikipedia or some other authentic source to know about Rajasthan.

Regards,
