My Childhood Fascination is now my Obsession

Hi all my fellow Local Guides,

I, MUKESH RASTOGI, am writing this post to introduce myself in our Local-Guides community. This post tells you about myself & why I love Google Maps the most.

I am 48 years old & a Mechanical Engineer. I live in Ghaziabad, a satellite town of Delhi(Capital City of India) for past 28 years. Before that I used to live in a small town, which is Aprox. 100 km away.

I love Maps since my childhood & got fascinated by it. I saw maps first time, When I was in my 6th. or 7th. stranded in 1981-82. It was a black & white textbook, containing maps of states, countries etc. this book attracted me the most. One day I saw a Colorful Atlas*(A book contains lot of maps of World)* on a book stall. Back then, we did not have much money, so I literally started collecting money for months to buy that Colorful Atlas. Finally I arranged INR 60.00 from my Mom, Daddy & Elder Brother to buy it. I used to pass hours with my precious Atlas exploring new places, cities, states, countries etc.

When I grew up and as I came closer to the technology, Google earth came into account. Back then it was just available on web browser. I was really amazed to see my own street or house on Google Earth. And then came the better version of it, the Google Maps.

Once I was travelling to my hometown and was using Google Maps for navigation. I was astound to find that the streets of my hometown and other landmarks were not updated, which made it hard for me to reach my destination. I was flabbergasted. This is the case with every small town or locality in India or world for that matter. Ever since then, I started posting every small detail I thought was important, on Google Maps to help other people. I am now on Level-8 and am proud to tell you that I have contributed over 2200+ images (views of my photos have crossed over 3 Million views and sill counting), just 10+ 360° images, only 8 videos, 170+ reviews, I have achieved 'Master Photographer’, ‘Expert Reviewer’, ‘Expert Trailblazer’ & ‘Novice Fact Finder’ badges as a local Guide right now. I love contributing on Google Maps & Love travelling a Lot.

I recently become active on Local Guide Connect & start contributing on it.

I have attended Local-Guide Meet-ups in Delhi hosted by @AmbrishVarshney at Mehrauli Archaeological trail & by @Explore_Keshav at Lodi Art District, which become unforgettable for me. Here are some glimpse of these meet-ups-

I got inspiration from @TravellerG , @aaryesdee , @AmbrishVarshney & all other senior LGs & I am learning from them.

Wow this is a great post man. I particularly remember when Google earth came out. It used to feel like flying when you search a location far away.

Thanks @bassey for ur valuable comment. I was really fascinated by maps since my childhood. It was really a great experience, when I encountered by google earth on my desktop computer first time. In those days smart phones were not available & Internet was very slow specially in India. Nice to hear from you the same about google earth. However Google Earth is now available for smartphones . I often use it on my mobile.
