Mushrooms and more! A visit to Far West Fungi, Ferry Building Marketplace, San Francisco

One of my favorite things to do is visiting fresh produce markets in the morning. The myriads of fresh vegetables, fruits and produce really excite me with the freshness, smell, colors and sheer variety.

A few days ago, I had some time to visit a fresh marketplace located at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Towards one end of the building lies a exceptional shop selling many varieties of mushrooms and related produce. Thought I wanted to share my experience visiting the mushroom producer.

Above: Oyster mushrooms are inexpensive, and provides a good base to soak up flavors of other ingredients. Delicious when fried with garlic, onions, olive oil and fresh herbs.

Above: Chanterelles and Chicken of the woods are a little harder to find, and are packed witth flavor.

Above: Seabeans/Samphire are a little salty and tastes of the sea. The lobster mushroom is incredibly meaty and takes on well with higher cooking.

Above: Abalone mushrooms are a larger variety of oyster mushroom and equally delicious. Wood ear mushrooms are healthy, chewy and good for adding for a little crunch.

Above: Cordyceps (not the real thing), haven’t tried it before. Shimeji and Shitake are Japanese varities and are delicious.

There are plenty of other varieties of mushrooms. This is a great place to come for a visit.

Great photos, @StephenAbraham ! It took me a while to realize but I’ve actually been here and bought some truffle products from this vendor in my previous visits to San Francisco. Thanks for sharing your visit to Far West Fungi!

Hi @StephenAbraham .

Thank you for sharing, as now I have learned about so many new types of mushrooms as well as their names. I wonder how many types of dishes could be made from all of them.

In the spirit of the green and freshness, this is a fruit vendor near my house.
