On 23rd June 2023 I attended Bangladesh Local Guides 211th Meetup. After meetup we approached to a hill food restaurant ‘Hebaang’, one of my favorite restaurant in Dhaka city. Earlier, I have written about the restaurant on Connect. There We ate ‘Mundi’, a hill dish.
Mundi is a popular dish of the hill tribe Marma community living in Bangladesh. It is the native food of the Marma people. But now this dish is not limited only to the Marmas, this Mundi recipe is becoming popular among the Bengalis of the plains beyond the three hill districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati, Bandarban.
What is Mundi
The whole process of making Mundi is done by hand. Atap rice is first soaked for two to three days. The wet rice is placed on a sieve with small holes to drain the water. Then the pulp is made by rolling it. The Mundi is pressed with the help of a special machine to make thin Mundi like noodles.
Serving Mundi
Mundi is first boiled. Boiled Mundi is poured into a bowl and salt, chili powder, cumin powder are added on it. It is topped with boiled egg, hot chicken stock, dried fish and tamarind paste. Then hot Mundi is served with coriander leaves. While eating, lemon should be mixed with all the ingredients.
Price
Each bowl of Mundi is usually sold at BDT150.

Last Word
Mundi demand is high in winter. People eat a lot of this food served hot. Many people eat Mundi when they go to the mountains. Some people buy packets of Mundi when they come. But hot Mundi served by hilly people themselves is more popular than packaged Mundi. Mundi is served three ways. Broth, chutney and fry. But people prefer broth.
Happy tourism!
