Mudha/ Sarkanda - Grass Furniture of Haryana

Haryana is famous for two types of woven furniture Mudha’s (round stools) and chairs made of Sarkanda (a reed) from Farukh Nagar and pedis from Sonipat which are essentially wooden stools with seat woven in cotton threads or sutli.

The Mudha’s is a low circular stool made by aligning Sarkanda in a crisscross constructing that is tied along the spine.

Last Month, I visited the place Farukh Nagar, which is famous for Sarkanda furniture. Farukh Nagar is approx. 22.4 Km from Gurugram City. It is a smooth drive except few kilometers rough road patch. Before the entry of the Farukh Nagar, we saw Mudha’s shops. The shops covered with Sarkanda furniture, which had Mudha (sitting stool) with back support & without back support, tables in different sizes and colors.

I got a chance to interact with the owner of the shop “Mr. Hoshiyar Singh” by shop name “Hoshiyar Mudhe Wale”, who is in this business for years now. He makes and sells it. In all his designs, I saw clarity and cleanliness. Indeed, real artist. He explained me different types of Mudha’s materials. Listing Below:

  • Jute - Jute is a long, soft, shiny bast fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from flowering plants. One of the most affordable natural fibers.
  • Nylon - Nylon is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers composed of polyamides. Nylon is a silk-like, thermoplastic generally made from petroleum, that can be melt-processed into fibers, films or shapes.
  • Resham (रेशम (Silk)) - Fiber made from Natural protein.
  • Rexine - It is a coated fabric, and PVC is usually the coating material. A faux leather material.
  • Sarkanda - The main stalk of the Sarkanda plant dries up and the grass is harvested and ingeniously transformed into a variety of products. The thicker parts are used to make stools known as Mudha’s while the outer skin is used as thatch.

He uses iron strings and nylon rope as a binding to create furniture. Images Below:

And, then I purchased Mudha’s from him to beautify my indoor and outdoor home. I placed near the greens at my home. This is how it looked :

Pro-Tips -

  • Reasonable Pricing.
  • Different Shapes, Sizes and colors available.
  • Easily Maintainable and Manageable.
  • Beautifies Indoor and Outdoor portions.
  • Works great for every age group.
  • Not too space consuming and can be cleaned easily.

We should purchase such great furniture and this would surely contribute towards their artistic and financial growth. I have always been interested in supporting small business and their artistic work.

Farrukhnagar is an amazing place.

I visited here twice and marveled at the huge markets and the shops on bo the sides of the main street.

Thank you for sharing the wonderful Sarkanda furniture @AnubhaBangia that looks very attractive.

Whereas this Sarkanda furniture is popular all over India, I note that the special feature is the use of nylon ropes and stripes at several prominent places that gives it a colorful and comfortable look besides strength and durability.

In Farrukhnagar, did you also visit the:

Mysterious and Enigmatic Gol Bavdi Stepwell

and

The Sheesh Mahal Crystal Palace

I went there on my bike which is my favorite vehicle, though I think the bus also plays there.
