Mt Eden, Maori name Maungawhau is an extinct volcano. It was formed 20,000 to 30,000 years ago and is 196 meters high.
On of the tallest volcano in the inland volcanic belt is also one of the most important symbols of Auckland. The magma spits out during the eruption covered nearly 6 square kilometres. It emits 160 million cubic meters of magma, which can fill 32,400 Olympic swimming pools. From here, you can admire the amazing remains of the volcanic crater, overlooking the panoramic view of downtown Auckland and two major harbours. The cone-shaped crater is at the foot of the top of the mountain, and there are always herbivorous cattle at the bottom of the crater. The towering modern buildings in the urban area and the green “pastoral scenery” reflect each other, which is indeed unique. On the famous volcano of Eden, there is a sign with the number of kilometres from the largest capital of the world.
Mount Eden is Auckland tourism hotspot because it is the highest point with stunning views. From the top of the mountain, you can see the panoramic skyline of Auckland city. Starting in 2016, small passenger vehicles can no longer go to the top of the mountain. In order to ensure the safety of visitors, all vehicles need to be parked in a parking lot halfway up the mountain.
Mount Eden has a temperate maritime climate, with little temperature difference in the four seasons, and it is suitable for tourism in all four seasons.
In 2018, a decking passage for tourist was built to protect this sacred mountain (to avoid the human traffic damage the circular trail over the summit around the crater.
