Motijheel Mosque.

Motijheel Mosque, Motijheel, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India.

Motijheel is a famous tourist spot in Murshidabad. One of the monuments built in the past on its banks is the Motijheel Mosque, which was built by Nawazish Mohammad Khan in about 1750 AD. It’s a rectangular mosque whose roof is adorned with three domes and minarets. There are lotus and kalash on the domes.

Eastern wall is decorated with niches, stucco, and jagged arch edges of the Iwans. Middle is larger and projected than others and adorned with two slenderical minarets. Central Iwan is fixed with a stone inscription in Persian in which its construction details are mentioned. It has three arched entrances. Rectangular structure which is made of bricks decorated with 4 octagonal pillars. Above the roof, two stage octagonal minarets on all the four corners. An octagonal overhang supported by the brackets on the roof of the first level, its roof is adorned with mouldings and railing. Next octagonal level is raised on arches, overhang supported by brackets, top is adorned with hemispherical dome whose base is enclosed by the railings. This dome is crowned with lotus and finials. Outer surfaces of northern, southern and western walls are decorated with stucco tiered arches.

The interior, that is, the main prayer hall, is decorated with utmost elegance. The curved edges of the pointed arches are jagged and the octagonal base formed by these arches supports the domes. Thus the prayer hall is three bayed and the ceiling of each dome is decorated with plaster and cornice. There is a main Mihrab richly decorated with arched series and floral bands in the center of the western wall and one each on either side. The northern and southern walls are provisioned with lattice windows. Complete interior displays the classical stucco ornamentation.

This is a protected monument of national importance and all the five prayers are offered regularly. It needs adequate maintenance and special care for its existence. Archaeological survey of India and Ministry of Culture are not putting much effort to develop the historical monuments sights in West Bengal to promote the tourism.

Nice pic @rizbab28 . That aqua blue looks nice and adds a nice color to the mosque. I agree the government should take good care of all these beautiful historical monuments that exists through out India. Lot of the structures are neglected too in Southern India. Thanks for sharing.

Keep Guiding!

Hi,

Thank you very much for your appreciation and concern.

You are right due to ignorance of ASI and local administration many historical monuments are turning to ruins even I noticed in Mahabalipuram, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Kerala, needs adequate awareness among public may be helpful to resolve or to reduce the effect.

Hi @rizbab28

Hope you are doing well. You are doing a great job of pinning and reviewing places on Google Map to help others.

We have developed an app Fill Masjid. We need your help in listing mosques and their prayer timings on it.

If possible, please share you email or contact number at info@fillmasjid.in so that we may discuss it further.

Thanks a lot. Regards.

One thing is that Murshidabad was a major centre of Islamic teachings as builder of this mosque Nawazish Mohammed Khan established Madarsa Furqaniyyah under his supervision in the vicinity of this mosque.

Thanks for your appreciation.
