Hello Friends. Some days ago I shared a post on my Omkareshwar trip. In that post I also told about Mortakka Bridge that this bridge has itтАЩs own history. I also said that if anybody replies for this I will post about it and our senior LG @TravellerG replied. So Finally I made this post for you all.
Mortakka Bridge is a two laned small height bridge constructed in the year 1958 on the River Narmada between Barwaha and Omkareshwar Road in Khargone and Khandwa Districts of Madhya Pradesh. This bridge plays an important role in connecting North India with South India. In the Ancient times this route was an important route of trade because this route passes through the Asirgarh Pass located in Satpura Valley which is also considered as Gateway of Deccan and South India. This bridge also provide way for reaching the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple which is counted in the 12 Jyotirlings.
During British time the meter guage railway line was developed by British from Delhi to Hyderabad. That time the rail route was crossing Narmada River. At that time the Railway Bridge was constructed by the british government nearly about 160 years ago. That time there was no road bridge. People during British rule was crossing Narmada river via ferry which takes one Takka currency that time for crossing the river. On that taka currency a design of peacock was encrypted. In hindi Peacock is known as Mor. So from Mor encrypted on currency and takka the name of currency the word was generated Mortakka. And then in 1958 after Independence when the bridge was sanctioned and constructed the Bridge was nomenclatured as Mortakka Bridge on the memory of Mortakka Currency.
Both Railway and Roadway bridge give their service for many decades. Railway bridge was constructed on height but road bridge was constructed on very short height. Many times in monsoon the flood occurs on this bridge due to which traffic jam occurs in Barwaha and Mortakka. The condition of road from Indore to Khandwa is also not proper. So to conquer this situation NHAI sanctioned the redevelopment of Indore Khandwa National Highway with the construction of New Bridge on Narmada River.
Similarly the meter guage line is now going to be converted into broad guage so the 160 years old Railway Bridge is also getting destroyed and the construction of New Railway Bridge will take place.
The New bridge will highlight the arts and culture of Madhya Pradesh and also will show some stories of Maa Narmada.
This will take some time but I am waiting to get it complete soon by which we will reach Omkareshwar frequently.
@Omkareshwarguid210 I think you are also wanted it to be completed very soon.
