Morchang - A 5000 years old Musical Instrument from South Asia

Hello Lovely family,

Along with my small efforts through Google maps & Local Guides Connect, I’m also a performer of Morchang, which is one of the oldest musical instruments from the South Asia region and is still used in Sindhi folk songs.

So today I want to share a short history of Morchang, which is still my passion and a great companion whenever I feel alone.

The story and history of the folk music of South India, Rajasthan India, and Sindh Pakistan are incomplete if we deduct the musical instrument Morchang from it.

Here are some cool facts about the musical instrument Morchang (Collected from Internet):

  • Morchang can be tallied under lamellophones, which is a subcategory of phallic ideophones.
  • The form consists of a metal ring with two similar prongs forming the frame, and a metal tongue between the prongs, attached to the ring at one end and free to stride at the other end.
  • A metal tongue, also named a trigger, is bent over the free end of the round ring to hit and vibrate it.

Marching was invented thousands of years ago. I saw it by myself during my last year’s visit to the Lok Virsa Museum, where they mentioned that "A similar musical instrument was recovered from “Mohen-jo-daro”. Although its true origin in United India is not well documented, most of the characters originated from secondary sources of ancient folk stories. It is mainly used in parts of South India, and Rajasthan , along with other musical instruments. Sindh and Rajasthan are known as Morchang and are used as an instrument in folk songs.

I’m so proud to share that I performed with Morchang on many stages & TV shows and was the first female who was an expert to play this ancient musical instrument.

Morchang has been used in India since ancient times. Its voice is really sweet. It is especially used in the folk music of Rajasthan. A few years ago when I visited Kutch, I saw a program on Morchang and Jodia Pawan Jugalbandi at a cultural event, which was really exciting.

Thanks for sharing this post @Shaheen_Gul

What a unique and beautiful instrument to learn, @Shaheen_Gul , thank you for giving us the history.

Have they always been made of metal, or were the original instruments made of different materials?

Excellent post @Shaheen_Gul and amazing video, so nice to hear you playing the Morchang.

The sound is so charming and satisfying to the ears.

During my visit to various places in Rajasthan, I saw many folk artists playing this instrument everywhere.

Here is one person at the Amar Sagar Jain Temple near Jaisalmer.

Also the video

Also nice to know that you have kept a millennia-old tradition alive.

I am absolutely delighted with the detailed photos of the Morchang that you shared.

I have never known a Morchang looks like this.

Great post… :+1: though I did not understand the caption in the Ayaz Melo, is it you or Shaheena Wahab?

Finally, here is my post where I saw the Mochang Artist for your reference and reading:
