#monthlytopic of May 2020 - Eye-catching Bento - POUNDED YAM AND EGUSI SOUP

Lagos is a fusion of many cultures; both foreign and local. Owing to this fact, there is no food that is lacking in Lagos. This morning, one of my friends (here on Connect) was asking if there were ‘Thai restaurants’ around me! Any cuisine that can not be found in Lagos cannot be found any where else in Nigeria.

However, if you come to Lagos and do not find a ‘spot’ to eat ‘Pounded Yam and Egusi Soup’, you haven’t been to Lagos at all!

Originally a Staple of those from Southern Nigeria, it is now consumed in all the regions of the country and enjoyed by all.

POUNDED YAM

Pounded Yam is made by pounding cooked yam in a mortar and pestle.

  • The brown skin is peeled off the Yam and cut in rectangular pieces, properly rinsing with clean water and set in a clean pot.
  • Be careful while rinsing the Yam, as the Yam can provoke an allergic reaction that may result in itching.
  • Cook the Yam for 25-30 minutes
  • Set down
  • Pound the yam in a mortar with a Pestle

These days, for convenience, many people use a Yam pounding machine

EGUSI SOUP

Egusi soup is made from ground melon seeds and there are as many ways of making ‘egusi soup’ as there are regions in Nigeria.

Because the meal is quite heavy (has high calories content), it is better to have it in the afternoon.

Hello, @Ewaade_3A

Thank you for joining #Monthlytopic and sharing this. Your bento looks tasty!
We also use a similar mortar and pestle for making mochi(Japanese rice cake) but recently most of the people use a machine in the place of them. This is the same history, haha.

@Ewaade_3A They look yummy. I haven’t tried those but I will look for a Nigerian restaurant in Bangkok. But I think it’s better I try them in Lagos. What do you think?

Thank you so much for joining us. I will try to think about my post and craft it.

Dear Falguni, please participate in the monthly topic too, the guidelines are quite simple.

Ensure you knock everyone off!

I like how you ‘cook’ with so much passion (who doesn’t right? but yours is different!)

It’s like a ‘break dance’, someone who loves break dance and wants to create something beautiful with friends, she dances, passes it on, on and on they go, that’s how I feel when I look at your Page!

you love cooking and you want to pass it on.

I want to see your Bento, here is the requirement;

Wait, Wait, not so quickly…

When you get to where you want to eat the Pounded Yam, do a video call, so I can confirm to you what you are eating, before, you end up eating ‘mashed yam’.

Pounded yam, has this feel to it, like it’s elastic, when you cut off a morsel … :yum:
