Money Saving Tips for a Winter Weekend Getaway at the Mountains

With half of the world in the northern hemisphere in the middle of winter right now, it is the perfect time for a ski weekend! I am so fortunate to live really close to the largest ski resort in North America, Whistler and Blackcomb, I get to take a quick trip over the weekend with a number of my friends to visit the mountains for some snowboarding. There is definitely something special with being in the mountains and in the middle of winter wonderland. It is definitely a great way to spend some time on the weekend away from the city, it has a calming effect. I visit frequently and the scenery still takes my breath away.

I am fortunate enough to do a winter weekend getaway at least once a year to Whistler with friends and family but with this recent trip, I have found that with climate change and rising costs, these trips are becoming more prohibitive. with the season starting late and unpredictable weather, it is difficult to have that amazing snow and powder day experience. I wanted to share a few tips that we have found to at least help us keep our costs down and still have a great experience, at least for Whistler!

Look for activities that don’t cost much or are free!

Whistler actually has a outdoor skating rink in the winter that is free! The only thing you would need to pay for are the skate rentals! Check when it is open and take a spin with your friends!

Book your tickets early!

If you have already locked in your dates for when you want to be on the mountain, then definitely try to buy your lift tickets well in advance. A few of us had put it off to the very last minute and ended up paying about $189+taxes per day. The others purchased well in advanced and paid about $110+tax per day. There can be substantial cost savings when planning a trip. I won’t tell you which group I am in! ?

Bring a snack with you onto the mountain for the day.

Eating on the mountain at peak hours during lunch is not only super busy but rather expensive if you want a full meal. Everyone else is trying to get some food as well so you’ll end up seeing a lot more queues and people waiting for food, waiting to pay, waiting to find space to sit. This time, we had a bit of snacks and did not head into one of the lodges until much later, around 2:30pm to grab a small lunch. Also, at this hour, lunch is on a discount as well, so, it is an even better way to save money.

Plan all of your meals!

From my experience at Whistler, and also other ski resorts that I’ve visited, careful planning is crucial, especially during peak travel season. Popular restaurants will get booked up or will be super busy and this may result in higher costs and/or a lot of waiting for the overall trip. At Whistler, a lot of the accommodations will actually have a kitchen and cooking a meal with your travel mates and staying in is a great way to save some money while spending quality time with them. On this trip, we actually even brought up some steaks with us and had a steak night. It does take some time to prepare, but it’s a great way to bond with friends and/or family!

But in between all of this, don’t forget to have fun with your friends and enjoy a gorgeous blue bird day as well while you’re sliding down the mountain!

I also took some footage on a 360 camera as well, I hope you enjoy!

We took took the Emerald Express chair and then went down Eco-Bowl into the Enchanted Forest. (If you would like to see a trail map, have a look here.) The Enchanted Forest was actually a lot of fun as there were trees on either side of you but the run was still wide enough and it felt like you were right in the middle of winter wonderland.

What about you?

What is one of your favourite weekend getaways and what kind of money saving tips can you share with other Local Guides?

Hi @Shirley , fact about me: I never see snow in my life, LOL. My favorite weekend gateway is booking a short travel by local train. It costs only $1 or $2 for round trip. Usually I choose Malang or Surabaya. Then, I will watch movie, $2, eat my favorite meatball ($1) then go home. Yeah living here is really cheap right? Btw, I love your picts and your video!

@Shirley Thank you for sharing the tips with us. My tips are:

  1. Study rail/bus passes and utilize them as best as you can
  2. Try street food, it’s delicious and cheap

Hope the tips are useful for us somehow.

Thank you for the great tips @Shirley !

I personally don’t know how to ski or snowboard so I prefer to stay inside and if there is a fireplace where I could heat my hands, that would be awesome! :slightly_smiling_face: That’s why I usually like to find a hut or a SPA hotel where I could enjoy the snow from the window. I know that @DeniGu had a memorable getaway this weekend, so I am tagging her to let us know all about it.

When it comes to saving money while travelling, I do all of the above that you mentioned. Planning in advance and bringing your own food and treats is a key to the budget friendly vacation.

Where else do you usually go during the winter?

Some excellent tips, @Shirley - although the meal planning is always the toughest part for us, we do usually bring snacks, whether it be an outdoor exploration or a theme park visit, haha.

But I REALLY love the 360 video - I had a ton of fun watching you go through the trail. Makes me excited to visit a mountainous region again  .

Thanks @Shirley for your post!

I am no longer skiing but spectacular mountains like these are my passion!
I really liked your 360° video through the Enchanting Forest, and I looked at it face up, admiring the sky that peeps through the trees:

thanks for sharing Shirley!

Bye,

Oh wow @NunungAfuah !! That is an amazing price for sure for a weekend away! I think train travel is so great because you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, read a book, get some rest, or even some combination of all these things! And meatballs as a meal sound great, I do remember those when I visited Indonesia! Hope I can visit again soon!!

@Ant_Bad_Yogi , you are totally right about street food! It is amazing! And as for study rail/bus passes, this is a great idea too!! I definitely miss the days when I was a student and was able to take advantage of these! Thanks again for your suggestions!

@MoniDi : I totally understand curling up by a fireplace as well in the winter! We didn’t do that this time but there was a hot tub at our hotel, so we definitely took full advantage of that!

Usually I travel to warm places as well in the winter. Last year around this time, I was in Orlando, where I got to meet with @TraciC for dinner ! Here’s one of our photos!

Oh I’m definitely looking forward to any stories that @DeniGu shares about her weekend getaway!! ?

I totally agree about planning meals is always the toughest part @SP31 !!! As much as I love to eat, I somehow always leave it to the last minute!!

And thanks! I’m glad I am making you excited about visiting the mountainous region again! I’m sure you’d have a blast!!

Wow, @Shirley ! I loved reading your story! These are some useful tips indeed!

To be honest, I am quite bad with skiing and snowboarding. I tried once and couldn’t get up for 15 minutes and then decided it is not for me, he-he-he. However, I love snow, mountainous views and the combination of snow and mountain is simply breathtaking.

Usually my low-budget weekends include a trip with my car and friends. We would decide on a place to visit, share the expenses of the car and enjoy a nice walk in a mountain nearby, a walk by the sea or visit some historical place in my country.

@Shirley If you visit Japan and use a rail pass, you will miss your good old days more. I always use a JR pass whenever I visit Japan.

Hi @Shirley Nice post and cool video! I really enjoyed it. Since I’ve never done any skiing and snowboarding, I would like to ask you : does it require a special skill to be able to do skiing and snowboarding? Or we could learn by ourselves on the spot?

Well, my kind on weekend getaway in low budget is using public transportation or online taxi in sharing cost, then exploring some restaurants or cafe in a day together with my friends. In each restaurant or cafe, we always share the meal together, so that we could taste many kind of food. And of course before the weekend comes, we always search what restaurant or cafe to visit.

@Velvel : Can you believe that online ride share (like Uber and Lyft) has only become available in my city for about a month?? It is crazy!! And going to eat with friends is always one of my favourite past times as well!!

Thanks about the video too!! As for learning to ski and snowboard, it isn’t that easy, best to take a lesson. It is considered a bit of an extreme sport too and can be very painful and dangerous when you first start, unless if you start as a young child. I started when I was in university and it took many years to learn. But now I have been going for over 10 years and it is enjoyable to go a few times a year. I may go again this weekend! :slightly_smiling_face:

Why did it only exist for a month @Shirley ? Was that a probation or any problem?

Wow… In conclusion, I need to learn from zero and keep persevering. It makes me envy with little friends who are so great in skiing :joy: They are so brave.

Is the ski resort mostly provide a training program for a begginer?

That’s good! Have a nice weekend and happy skiing

@Velvel : For ride share, our government did not allow it until a month ago. They said there were safety concerns.

And yes, there are ski lessons at all of our mountains here! but it takes perseverance and practice! Much like anything else in life. I mostly just enjoy seeing the views. It is a lot of work, wake up early, it is cold, wear the right clothes, etc etc.
