Mods delete my reviews just because business doesn't like it

I’ve had enough.
At least two of my reviews are deleted with rejected appellations just because a business doesn’t like me and tries to legally threaten me.
I don’t even mention that Google should protect us, not these morons, and not to cooperate with all these shady “lawyers” at all. But why do you all delete them even before they really do something? Let them go full on and use their “lawyers” not knowing our real names and with our reviews, obviously sharing real experiences. These reviews are absolutely not against the law everywhere, and I, as a reviewer, do not have to share some additional data after a threatening letter either with google, “lawyers” or businesses themselves. THEY have to prove it’s against the law, not me - that it’s real. I won’t send my data just “as a proof of visit etc.” to be shared with such businesses who obviously can misuse it.
TLDR. Google, what are you doing? Why do you all protect bad businesses, not Local Experts?!
Businesses don’t face consequences even in cases of obvious violations, like thousands of fake reviews and such threatening to EVERY SINGLE bad rating. No one believes their “4.9 rating with 1000 reviews”. I would even go as far as suggesting to mark them as “rating fraudsters” and giving them 1.0 forever. Yeah I know it’s a bit another problem, I just wanted to show two sides of google’s crappy attitude to us.

If this practice will continue, I will think about just deleting all my content from here and calling to do the same to others who faced similar things.

Hi @LexaZ2009

Google do not delete a review just because a business do not like it. A business can simply "report" a review, and the team may remove it if the review violates Google’s review policies.

Are you referring to the same review mentioned here?

What may happen is that, if a review is edited (or a photo attached to the review added or removed) the AI may interpret it as a violation.

It would be better if you can share here the text of the review, for us to better help you

No, it’s not the same.

I am referring to situations when I receive a legal threat, which Google “passes” from the business. I don’t cooperate, because I don’t have to and don’t want to provide them any data, but the review is gone anyway. Without any legal verdict, just after the fact of receiving a “legal threat”, Google preventively removes the thing.

It might be unknown for you, because of differences in local laws and, I believe, differences in how local Google offices treats such conflicts. I country where I live (Germany) legal threats and fake ratings (like aforementioned 4,9 with 1000+ reviews) are a kind of national sport. I’ve never seen such obsession with such shady activities elsewhere.

I agree with you about fake contents, that are a big issue and the reason for many reviews that disappear, @LexaZ2009

The option mentioned by you is in fact part of the Maps user-generated content policy that we accept when we join the Local Guides program: “We remove content because it violates our policies or terms of service, or to comply with legal obligations.

I know that sometimes it is discomforting. As I said, It would be helpful to see the text of the review, as it is always possible to Delete the review and post it again, but we may help you with the policies. I am sure @MortenCopenhagen will be happy to help you in this matter

It would be also helpful, @LexaZ2009 , if when responding you tag the person you are responding to. Active member follow a lot of conversations, so the tag let them know that who respond is talking to them

@ErmesT , I am tired of these meaningless answers.

The only thing I can still say about what you are citing - my reviews don´t violate and legal acts until the moment when the court won´t prove otherwise. It is not up to some mods not understanding a single thing to decide.

Also copying text of these reviews… Again - they were deleted ONLY AFTER legal threats. Before that mods thought they are okay. They just delete every single thing after the first threat of idiotic business owners.

First one, “cafe” review:

I’ve just put 1 star after my visit in 09.2021 (I even have this place in location history in my Google account), but now there’s a notification in my gmail that they want to delete my rating through google or even legally sue me because “they don’t know who I am”. Shit it’s crazy. Don’t even come close to this place if you don’t want problems afterwards… What about their “lawyer” and removal of the rating - I didn’t lie anywhere, I didn’t insult anyone and I don’t have to show my freaking passport or something to show who I am and when I visited the place, because it’s my personal data and I have the right not to share it with suspicious persons like them. 14.01.22 Hands off my ratings please Upd. It’s crazy. After more than a year they try to threaten me the same way again. I won’t cooperate with them through Google just because I don’t want to. Google already knows everything about my life - including location history, payments and much much more. Their “legal department” or whatever don’t need my real name or receipts or anything else, as well as owners of this horrendous place. Next time I’ll think about finding a lawyer and taking a little revenge, to be honest. Believe me, it’s more than possible. 05.2023. Once more, hands off. It looks just atrocious and I’ll add any of your attempts here for people to know.

Second one, “Taxi company”:

Waited for a car for 45 minutes or so. Driver was nervous and drove pretty unsafe. Cash only. Upd. After a year they threaten me with lawyer, requiring to prove anything or delete the review. First of all - review is NOT fake and I have evidence (e.g. Google location history with clearly recognizable drive with their taxi, photos on my phone etc.). Secondly - they work with cash only and obviously don’t give any receipts (and even if somebody gives it’s not my duty to store them for years), thirdly - doing that is extremely disrespectful. So now here will be 1 star instead of two. Hands off my TRUE reviews. I’m not a spam bot, I’m a legit user who leaves reviews ONLY having experience with them and I don’t have to prove it or reveal my real name. Hence, I don’t violate anyone’s rights. Upd2. They even seem complain about the reviews, which can probably result into ban from Local Guides, which is annoying and hard to revoke. Bringing this review back is especially hard. But I keep trying to show the truth. Upd3. Google mods! Don’t you want some freedom of speech? Why do you remove the review only because of a business complaining. They don’t like the truth, and you keep sugarcoating them… Don’t block true experiences, please, no matter what they say.

After all… I know people here don´t like to read properly. So I will repeat myself. Reviews were totally okay for Google until the moment of receiving a threat from the businesses.

@LexaZ2009

Local Guides Connect is a Community, where other Local Guides are trying to help you with your issue. They do this based on their knowledge and on the rules of the program. Not providing specific details you will obviously receive “generic answers”. I am sorry if you find them “meaningless”.

Let me try to understand.

Review 1: Is everything written here, and copied here below by me between quotation marks, the actual text of the review? This seems not to be the original review, but only the actual one, that will never be posted, because it is just a series of comment about the request of removal of the review. and not a review of the business. Looks like you are trying, through your comments, to talk with an operator, while most probably once posted the review was removed directly y an AI, because not relevant to the place. can you share the original content of the review (the one that the business asked you to remove)?

Taxi company: Is everything written here, and copied here below by me between quotation marks, the actual text of the review? Is the part I highlighted in bold the original review?

  • Regarding the actual review my comments are the same that I gave you for the first one: it will removed immediately by the AI

  • Regarding the part in bold: You are highlighting that the company is committing a crime: Tax Evasion. Tax evasion in your country is considered a very serious crime and I’m not surprised that the company has started legal proceedings, which could lead to a lawsuit against you for “defamation in the press”. These are precisely the legal implications that Google tries to avoid, the fact that you can be sued for defaming someone by writing that they have committed a crime. Furthermore, Google, as the owner of the platform where the “defamation” was published, could be prosecuted for “lack of control”. It seems obvious to me that the review has been removed.
If we are aware of a tax crime, the thing to do is make a report to the tax police, not to put it in a review.

Obviously this is just my opinion, but I confirm that in my opinion those two reviews will never be published.
That’s why I advised you to eliminate them completely and rewrite them again, respecting the rules.

Regarding your last comment “people here don´t like to read properly” I would like to disagree. I well know that people here frequently think that we should know also what you didn’t write, but it is not like this, and a clear and detailed post (like your last reply) is the only way to receive a clear and detailed answer.

You may like the answer or not, but this is another story. I really hope you will be able to fix your issue, but for sure with the actual content the chance to have your reviews published is zero

@ErmesT , okay, what I said isn’t about your answers personally. Don’t take it like this.
My short comments about these two:

  1. In my country it’s perfectly legal to accept cash only and it’s very very common in this business. It doesn’t say about tax fraud by any means. Some mods might have thought like you but in Germany almost any business have the right not to accept cashless payments at all. It’s often illegal in my home country (Russia) so I can understand that a foreign mod could be misleaded, seeing legal debate and thinking this was the problem.

Everything marking “Upd…” there was added after start of this “fight” because…well it’s kind of an experience with business too, because THEY initiated this semi legal hassle. Only the last one is kind of a desperate attempt to talk to mod.

2nd: originally there was only 1 star from me. Then I wrote the first part and it was public…like for a year or more. Similar reviews were there too.
Recently they tried to remove it with this legal story again, and Google removed it immediately. And only after that I wrote the 2nd “Upd.”, so it was never public like this. It was public as a first longer part.

@ErmesT also the same company. This is public. The company just tries to issue legal threats to everyone rating them bad.

Accepting cash only is, again, legal. Writing about it should be allowed, of course.

I didn’t accuse them in tax fraud or anything, as well as this guy.

P. S. Both companies while threatening to me were trying to say that I didn’t visit them. There was nothing about false accusations in a crime.

Ok, got it now, @LexaZ2009

However, when you say something generic like " people here don´t like to read properly" I will definitely take it personally. People is a very wide terms, that includes you and me too.

However i think in the mind of the business the issue is not on “cash only” that is perfectly fine, but in the potential implication of "no receipt", even if there is not the legal obligation to provide it.

All the update you made on the review in any case have the result to make it impossible to make it public. This is most probably not the action of an operator (with 150 millions of contributors, this would be impossible). When a review is reported, it is simply scanned by the filter, and the AI of the filter decide the action to take. The same happen when we update a review. So trying to update our reviews in an attempt to talk with an operator is not only useless, but also a way to make our reviews totally “Off Topic”.

Recently Google changed the way for the AI to analyze our reviews, and the new filter is quite harsh (several of my reviews were blocked too).

Fortunately there is the possibility to ask for a check of the review by through this form, as explained in An update on how we moderate Google Maps reviews -

In my opinion you should

  • delete (not edit) the two controversial reviews and write two brand new reviews, focusing only on the service you received (like the original reviews) avoiding any additional, and useless, comment. Most probably the two reviews will not be made public, because the AI keep memory of the user.
  • If the reviews are not public proceed through this form for an operator to check the review. Adding additional comment in the review will not help. On the contrary, it will make it Off Topic. Please keep in mind that the check may take several weeks to be performed

I am fully with you and even worse. On top of the lack of protection comes a punishment system that blocks you if you post something that they may not like. I was suspended today after 700+ reviews of places I had truly been and commented nicely. Today 20 posts were removed as punishment. What happened? I had posted a nice review about a company that made a public statement that I liked. I thought that leadership team seems to care about corporate social responsibility and suddenly I am suspended. Wow… reminds me of China “behave or we will punish you and deduct points”. The bad thing is that they not only punish me as a private entity, the also harm the 20 companies where I had posted a good review earlier.

@DM_WM

If you want help understanding and hopefully fixing your issues, please start a new thread.

All of your 790 reviews are now hidden.

Please include the text of your latest 5 reviews with links to the places on Google Maps.

Cheers

Thanks, Morton. I have now learned that the work of years can be gone with a finger’s snip; just because some algorithm thinks that what I write is not aligned with some policy. My 790 reviews were deleted, and even after complaining and confirming that it was based on an error, they are still gone. I will no longer post any reviews. I am glad that I learned my lesson early enough and feel sorry for all the companies that are punished by the deletion of my work as collateral damage. All the best, Joachim
