Missing wines at Martinborough

When it rains so much here, I miss drinking red wine and white wine at Martinborough, NZ; the home to NZ’s best wines.

Before going to NZ, I have never known they are so good.

Say, I was not a fan of wine, alcohol or such kinds of beverage.

  • Many Cambodians drink beer (common and nationwide) and rice wine and palm wine :Teok Thnot Chou ទឹកត្នោតជូរ mostly at rural areas.
  • Wine (red wine/white wine) is for party or gathering with multicultural atmosphere or with people from Western countries (more expensive - high class)

A trip to Martinborough changed me. I was a teetotaler (my family is: my dad is absolute teetotaler and brothers seldom drink, tea is our meeting drink) I am addicted to red wine and would have a glass or two when participating in parties or gathering, especially at work.

  • There are various wines with different names but I only know two: white wine and red wine. Learn more about types of wines here. There are 9 types of wine: full, medium and light-bodied red wines, full and light-bodied white wines and aromatic white wines, Rosé wines, Dessert & fortified wines and sparkling wines.
  • Wine might be a good combination with cold weather.
  • Wines can be more expensive

A friend of mine from the school invited me and my friend to join winery tour to one of the winery in Martinborough called Murdoch James Winery, big winery in that town. The experience included:

It was a different experience where we:

  • Visit the vineyards
  • Listen to the detailed of wine marking from the owner, how to prepare the vineyard, how grapes are collected and kept,
  • Touring the winemaking factories,
  • Taste different kinds of wine
  • Take a break with some snacks & treats of wines/drinks
  • Buy some wines as souvenir homes (Cambodian government only allows two bottles of wines through airport back home)

Back home, there is a vineyard in Battambang called Banan Grape Farm where they grow grape and produce wine. However, I do not know how their business is going.
