Metro Cards around the world

Hey there!,

I really love to travel, and one of the things that I love to do on my travel time, is to know the metro system on every city where I go.

Once there on the city, instead of bought keychains, I like to buy a metro card, or a local transportation card. After some years, I took this as a hobby.

Today, I would like to share some photos of the metro cards that I have.

  1. This one is from my city, Monterrey, Mexico.

One ride ticket:

Prepaid card:

  1. Mexico City, Mexico

Fun fact: This card could be used to rent a bike!

  1. New York City, United States

Fun fact: This metro system is open 24/7!, and is the best way to commute in the city, I really loved this.

  1. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Fun fact: This one is very expensive!, I bought this one for just one ride.

  1. London, United Kingdom

Fun fact: Here is also expensive a single ride!

  1. Paris, France

One single ride ticket

  1. Brussels, Belgium

Fun fact: I consider, here is the best place to live.

:sunglasses: Berlin, Germany

  1. Tokyo, Japan

Fun fact: For non-japanese travelers, there are an all inclusive train pass, that includes all the metro systems, and trains trought the country. Including the shinkansen (the bullet train) in japan. This train is an amaizing experience, I really loved!.

  1. Bogota, Colombia

I have another one, from Medellin, Colombia, unfortunately I don’t have a picture of it :disappointed:

I’m really impressive with the differences in the fare of the metro systems around the world, at leaste here in my citi (Monterrey, Mexico), the metro system is the cheapeast way to commute, a single ride is something like $0.25 usd, while in other cities it could be something like $10usd!

Is this a common hobby? somebody has the same hobby?.

Have a nice day!

This is definitely a refreshingly interesting collection idea @NestorSilvaB

Welcome to Local Guides Connect :handshake: and congratulations on your first post here.

I too have traveled on metro trains in several cities in the US and in Europe but did not retain the cards.

Within India, I have taken the metros in 3 cities so far and have retained the metro cards because it still has a lot of cash left in it

I too would like to share the photos in my reply and update this post after a few hours.

Here’s the Bengaluru i.e. Bangalore Metro card and the cheapest ride was USD 0.1 = 10 cents in 2019

Meanwhile, I invite you to introduce yourself to the local guide community here:

Impressive collection @NestorSilvaB and I’m thrilled to read that you consider Belgium the best place to live

Let me know when you’re in the area again, then we could go grab a beer!

Hi @NestorSilvaB ,

I also try to collect the tokens and the cards from the metros/subways that I travel in. Though limited to domestic travel it is delightful to see the monuments of the city impressed upon the tokens.

This is the Rumi Darwaza on Lucknow Metro’s token which is valid for one way.

@JanVanHaver , Belgium has a great weather, at least for me hahaha, and has a lot of geen areas and is in the middle of great countries, you can reach great cities by train in a short time.

The short time I spent there, I really enjoyed the food, the walkins and the people is warm. Definitely I want to be there again.

@Shuv , Woow, I didn’t know that some metro systems uses coins or tokens as a ticket.

In Mexico City, you could use your apple watch or your phone to directly pay you ticket, instead of using a phisical ticket, token or card.

@NestorSilvaB Someday maybe that will be a reality here as well, but the lack of technological penetration and reluctance of many to adapt to new ways are always a hindrance. There were some talks of using NFC in the past but wasn’t implemented.

Here is an image of the Delhi Metro Card.

@deepakjhic the tokens used to be beautiful as well but no idea why they have changed those to the ones that are now. Saw some with Qutub Minar embossed in a similar manner of Bengaluru and Lucknow but can’t find those anymore I guess.
