- Melchor de Mencos (in honor of the homonymous Spanish military) is a town in the Petén department in the Republic of Guatemala. It has a population of 23 813 habitants. The town of Melchor de Mencos was founded on April 26, 1962, when General Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes served as President of the Republic. The town was named in honor of the Spanish military Melchor de Mencos, who defeated the English in the Laguna de Coba, otherwise this territory would be part of the territory of Belize; in honor of him it was changed the name of “Iron of Stone” and it was founded as city Melchor de Mencos. On October 12, 1979, Ramiro Casanova Trujillo, Mayor of the city, placed the bust of the distinguished Sergeant Major Melchor de Mencos in the city.
