Meet The Lion of the Mountains (Day 11/365)

Remember Day 2 of my posts where I introduced you to the Eagle of the North? Let me now introduce you to the Lion of the Mountains.

Commonly known as the Lions Head of Baguio City travelers coming from the lowlands going to the mountains of Baguio will meet this huge Lions Head if they pass by Kennon Road. Kennon Road was built under the supervision of then Maj. Lyman Kennon along with the builders of Baguio, men who constructed the road coming from different nationalities like Filipinos, Indians, Chinese and Japanese. The construction of this major highway to Baguio City was finished in 1905.

Today, due to the onset of rains and frequency of rock slides in Kennon Road, this major road connecting Baguio City to the plains of Luzon is closed to traffic.

Back to the Lions Head, this huge monument was conceptualized by the Lions Club of Baguio to showcase the existence of their organization in Baguio City. An ifugao artist by the name of Reynaldo Lopez Nanyac was commissioned to carve out the lion’s head from a limestone boulder. The lions head was unveiled in 1972.
