Meet Accessibility Champion, Zhanna Burunina

Local Guide Zhanna Burunina (@JaneBurunina) lives Mykolaiv, Ukraine, and is interested in mobility as she believes that this information provides independence to wheelchair users and everyone who needs it. She does her best to highlight accessibility information in her reviews on Google Maps and loves to create lists with accessible places. She believes that she can help a lot of people through her contributions on Maps.

Why are you interested in accessibility?

Accessibility of places and paths allows people to maintain independence and freedom of movement. It’s important that people use services and products, regardless of [their] physical capabilities or other restrictions.

I learned the importance of accessibility contributions on Google Maps when I was attending Connect Live 2018. Since then, I do my best to highlight accessibility in my reviews and upload photos of special amenities to make Maps more inclusive for everyone. I believe I can help people through my contributions.

Why are you passionate about accessibility information being shown on Google Maps?

Google Maps is an effective, easy-to-use service, which is widely popular. Therefore, accessibility information on Maps is available to everyone, and it can be beneficial to many people.

What have you done to help add accessibility information or generate visibility for accessibility information to/for Google Maps?

In the places I visit, I pay special attention to the accessibility features and take photos of the ramps, lifts, accessible parking, [and] amenities. I have uploaded photos and shared detailed descriptions of accessibility in my reviews. Collecting information [also] helps me to answer accessibility questions on Maps. I have created a list, “Accessible places for family time&food,” to help people who are searching [for] places to go out, make a choice. I have also hosted and attended Accessibility Walk meet-ups to explore the accessibility features of places and contribute this information on Google Maps.

What area (mobility, vision, hearing, etc.) are you most interested in improving?

I believe every area is important. At the same time, I mostly focus on mobility because mobility gives independence. Information about accessible entrances, ramps, and elevators helps people with disabilities, older adults, [and] parents with kids, and [can] be beneficial to travelers with luggage as well.

What’s your favorite Google Maps feature?

There are many fascinating features in Google Maps, which I use every day as well as during my trips. Most of all, I love to create and share lists of places.

What do you wish other Local Guides knew about accessibility?

When I host a Local Guides meet-up, first of all, I share with the attendees what accessibility information on Google Maps is, and why it is important. Even if our contribution is small, it makes a difference and can help people who are looking for accessible paths and places.

What one feature would you like to see on Google Maps?

I would like to see an “Accessibility Tab” in the photo section on Google Maps, which shows photos of the accessibility features of a place. This option could provide quick access to the required information.

What’s your tip for finding your passion through the Local Guides program?

I do not know of another such unique program like the Local Guides. Here, everyone can find friends, like-minded people, and [share their] passion for food, travel, and more. Just think what is close to your heart, and you will find it here!

Are there any posts on Connect or meet-ups you’ve hosted that help demonstrate your contributions around accessibility to Local Guides, Google Maps and your community?

I have posted articles about accessibility on Connect to share my experience and knowledge with the community:

I have also hosted Accessibility Walks and Knowledge Sharing meet-ups in my home city Mykolaiv and in Tallinn, Estonia, when I visited it:

Many Congratulations @JaneBurunina

You really deserved this honor. As Co-host of many virtual meet-ups for Accessibility Contributions on Google Maps, I can say she has a great passion for Accessibility on Google maps and Local Guides Connect.

Her great ideas, her awesome gesture for meet-up attendees, her style of presentation, these all things made our Accessibility Virtual Meet-ups a successful series. And by her tremendous enthusiasm to educate more and more people, we got many new incredible contributors who are now contributing on Connect and Google maps superbly.

Thank you so much @PoliMC for sharing some more wonderful thoughts of my friend Jane Burunina to us.
