Portugal is famous for its historical heritage. Historical events caused the background for the modern festivals. Typical “feira medieval” includes live music, historical recreations, jugglers, dances (folk and oriental), fire show, etc.
Small festivals are free and the program is quite short (2-3h, then repeats). The large ones are paid (8-15 EUR), and have more diversity of activities, music and shows.
The largest ones in Portugal are: Viagem medieval (Santa Maria da Feira), Óbidos, Leiria (this year is closed due to the natural conditions), Tomar, Palmela, Coimbra (by the way the oldest one), Castro Marim, Silves, etc. The last two are in Algarve.
The largest ones close to Lisbon: Palmela, Sintra, Marvila (currently the date is not confirmed), Óbidos (1.5h by bus from Lisbon), Tomar (2h by train from Lisbon). Also there are at least 10 historical events close to the capital (Metropolitana de Lisboa) like festival de Corroios.
(!)Be careful, sometimes social medias may provide you wrong information about the time and dates - always check it twice.
Also there are small events like concerts (typically in Sintra: Casa do Fauno, Casa do Viriato), historical recreations, folk dances, medieval combats (the next event 2-3 of May, train station - Santa Iria, castle).
The largest festival of May: Sintra Fire Fests - Beltane (Sintra).
