As a passionate Local Guide who loves immersive visual content, 360° photography, and mapping Street View paths, I want to share a recent project aimed at improving the map for a beautifully historic area in Czechia: Kutná Hora
While this UNESCO World Heritage town attracts thousands of visitors, many of the scenic paths and hidden corners surrounding its monuments weren’t fully visible on Google Maps. I grabbed my 360° gear, walked 17 kilometers, and mapped these historical routes to create new blue lines on the map.
Here are the key historical locations I focused on:
1. The Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr)
Historically, it was right here in the Italian Court of Kutná Hora where silver coins (Prague Groschen) were minted in medieval times. It was the absolute center of royal power and wealth. I meticulously mapped the entire park below the court, capturing all the winding paths, hidden nooks, and the stairs leading to the beautiful gazebo. Before this, these walking paths barely existed on Google Maps—now, no real-world pilgrim or tourist will get lost here!
2. St. Barbara’s Church and Kaňk Hill
Kutná Hora was built on silver mining, and Kaňk Hill was the actual heart of this mining rush centuries ago. The monumental St. Barbara’s Church was dedicated to the patron saint of miners. I mapped the entire area surrounding this stunning Gothic cathedral and the adjacent Jesuit College. To give people a complete experience, I also added a scenic walking path from Kaňk to the local neighborhood, which offers an incredible panoramic view of the entire city—the exact view miners would have seen after a hard shift.
3. Sedlec Ossuary
If you love mystical historical atmospheres, the world-famous Sedlec Ossuary is a must-see. I mapped the surroundings of this unique monument, capturing its modern reconstruction progress so virtual visitors can see how the area looks today.
4. The Historic Road to Malešov
For history and hiking buffs, I mapped a long walking route that follows the historical mills and crosses the Velký Rybník (Large Pond) all the way to the village of Malešov. This is the area where the famous Battle of Malešov took place in 1424, where the Hussite leader Jan Žižka famously used the terrain to win. The newly mapped path ends right by the historic local church.
Fun Extra: A Modern Fair on Street View!
As a Kutná Hora native, I couldn’t resist mapping a very special local tradition: the famous Sedlec Fair. Brief window of time, but a huge event. While it’s a modern amusement festival rather than a medieval site, it was an amazing experience to put it on the map. I believe it might be one of the very few active funfairs you can completely walk through via Street View!
