The stony data of the origin
The town of Mapimí Durango is located in a desert region, which was formerly part of the sea of Tetis, as attested by the abundant fossils of marine animals, some of which are offered in craft stores along with decorative gems from the mines of the town.
The native peoples and the founding of the colony
The original Indians that inhabited this arid zone were nomadic groups. During colonial times, rich mineral deposits were discovered, mainly silver, which led the conquistadors to settle in Mapimí, Durango. To cover the transportation needs of the region, roads and barracks were built to protect the shipments of precious metals. The Royal Road of Inland was a main route to transport silver from the mines to the viceregal capital in Mexico City. Mining generated great wealth for the Spaniards.
Current situation of the town
Mapimí was the first Magical Town of Durango and is also recognized as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. The main points to visit are the ghost town of Ojuela, which is accessed through a one-way access, which is exciting because it borders an abyss. Upon arrival, you can walk across the impressive suspension bridge, which is suspended over a large gully. At the end of the bridge is the old mine.
Today it is a museum of site, that among its curiosities exhibits a mummified mule, same that was used in the times of the mining exploitation for the transport of precious metals. These attributes have turned it into an interesting tourist center full of legends.
