My girlfriend and myself travel a lot and are particularly interested in archeology and lately noticed while travelling through Cyprus, that especially smaller archeological sites aren’t shown when searching through the Google Maps search, when they are not having a lot of ratings, photos or visitors.
This is why I started through our last trip to Cyprus to now focus on explicitly search for smaller sites and try to enhance them for other people by adding sub-locations and describe them in the comments and lateron add more informations by showing videos of the sub-locations.
My goal is to raise awareness on these smaller sites and possibly (my hope) to increase visitors and their signoficance on Google Maps to make it easier for other interested travelers to find these sites.
For example I wanted to add this location to this post and couldn’t find it through the search:
What often makes it difficult is, that archeological sites have a lot of points of interest on a relatively small space, so the sub-locations have to be often summed up, which doesn’t make it optimal.
In the future I will try to enhance my comments even more with historical information, so people will be able to have a tour around and get the information on what they see.
Especially small archeological sites suffer from the lack of attention and potentially risk to attract people that litter the sites, damage the sites, put graffitis on and so on.
I’m even think about trying to raise money with my instagram profile to invest in preserving sites, but this is in early planning stage.
One thing I thought about was to enhance ruins fotos with lineart that shows how the site looked during ancient times.
What do you think? Would the last thing be a good idea?
