Make Local Guides lanterns for Mid Autumn Festival (Lantern Festival)

Mid Autumn Festival is one of the most important celebration of people of Chinese descent, and this year it will be on October 1st, 2020. In preparation for this day, I wanted to share a simple way to make lanterns (with only 2 pieces of paper) which we can use for our celebrations, whilst enjoying other festivities like eating mooncakes and more, on that day.

[Picture below] This is a sample lantern with Local Guides community logos, lit with a candle. We can easily make this with 2 pieces of printed paper in whatever design you wish.

[Picture below] Print 2 pieces of Letter size/A4 size paper with any design or color you want. (Ensure we don’t use any proprietary images, for example the official Local Guides pin logo). The more complete the coverage on the page, the better.

[Picture below] Fold one of the pages into half horizontally. And cut slits throughout the page, but do not cut through, leave it looking like gills as below.

[Picture below] open up the page, and roll it around like a cylinder and fasten both ends with a tape or stapler. it will look like a log with a fold in the center.

[Picture below] letting it sit vertically, the center fold will be compressed and it will look much more like an open lantern.

[Picture below] Roll up the 2nd page into a cylinder log and insert it into the slit lantern, so the entire length is covered with paper internally. Then fasten the internal tube with some tape or stapler.

[Picture below] Put a light source within the lantern such as a candle or LED lamp or the bulb. There you have it! A simple paper lantern with Local Guides community logo we can display proudly during the night of the Mid Autumn Festival.

I will write a separate post about celebration of the Mid Autumn Festival in the next few days as we get closer to the date, and sharing my favorite mooncakes. As well as photos from many locations around town at night.

Feel free to share your own lanterns here!

It’s a really nice idea! :slightly_smiling_face:

What a good creation! Well done @StephenAbraham

It’s only a week to go to Mid Autumn Festival. Before the day, I’ve even already eaten some 中秋月饼 (mooncake) as I love it :yum: :joy:

Looking forward to your next story about the mooncake and the celebration!

Thanks for inviting @StephenAbraham

Today I buy another new mooncake. Hopefully it is still available until this virtual meet-up, so that I could show you and everyone

@StephenAbraham – I love your creativity!

I would add if you can find printable card stock paper (heavier in weight than printer or copier paper), your Local Guides paper lantern would be nice and sturdy.

My other suggestion is to cut a strip of paper (like a 2 inch ban) to make a “handle” for your lantern and staple the ban on either side to make your lantern look like a lantern.

Cheers,

Karen
