Hello, Local Guides! If youâre looking for a breathtaking escape just outside Shillong, you absolutely must visit Elephant Falls (locally known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiewâthe three-step waterfall).
My recent visit reminded me why this is one of Meghalayaâs most famous natural wonders. The picture above captures the beautiful journey down, where the forest canopy feels like a natural cathedral, filtering the sunâs light into magical, emerald-green beams.
That looks like a stunning view, perfectly capturing the lush, green canopy of Meghalaya! Here is a Local Guide Connect post you can use, featuring the location:
Why I Love It (The Three Tiers of Beauty):
-
The Ascent/Descent: The pathway down to the falls is a well-maintained, railed trail, but it is steep! It winds through dense, fern-covered slopes, making the air cool and crisp. Itâs a proper little hike that builds anticipation.
-
The Three Cascades: The falls truly live up to their Khasi name. You get a unique view of each of the three tiers. The third and final tier is the most spectacular, where the water crashes down with a resounding roar, creating a permanent, refreshing mist.
-
Perfect Photography Spot: As you can see from my shot, the interplay of light and shadow through the dense foliage is a dream for photographers. Get your camera ready, especially in the late morning or early afternoon when the sun is high!
Local Tips for Your Visit:
-
Best Time to Visit: Right after the monsoon (October to February) offers a great balance of high water flow and clear, pleasant weather. During the peak monsoon (June-September), the falls are at their most powerful, but the steps can be very slippery.
-
Footwear is Key: Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip. The stone steps can be slick, especially near the lower tiers.
-
Budgeting: The entry fee is nominal (around âč20 per person, plus a small fee for carrying a camera).
-
Donât Rush: Take a break on the benches along the way. Stop to truly soak in the tranquility and the sound of the gushing water.
-
Souvenirs & Snacks: Near the entrance, youâll find local stalls selling warm snacks, tea, and unique Khasi handicrafts like bamboo items and organic honey. A great way to support the local community!
Elephant Falls isnât just a place to see water; itâs an immersive experience into the heart of Meghalayaâs âScotland of the Eastâ charm.
