Majapahit Heritage in Peneleh, Surabaya, East Java: The Story Behind Sumur Jobong

The Majapahit Old Well, known locally as Sumur Jobong, is a hidden yet invaluable piece of history tucked away in the Peneleh district of Surabaya. Situated just steps from the birthplace of Bung Karno and the residence of H.O.S. Cokroaminoto, two towering figures in Indonesia’s national movement, the well stands quietly among narrow alleys and aging houses, radiating a timeless aura.

Interestingly, the discovery of its historical layers did not begin with an official archaeological expedition. It was the local residents, intending to deepen the well for daily use, who stumbled upon fragments of pottery lining the well, animal bones, and human remains. DNA analysis later revealed that descendants of the individuals buried there are still living in the surrounding area. Their presence adds a living dimension to the past, as they shared oral histories that illuminate the well’s deeper cultural significance.

Surrounding the site are old graves of notable local figures, reinforcing the spiritual and historical character of Peneleh. While formal signage and documentation may be limited, the area invites deeper curiosity—encouraging visitors to explore the lingering traces of Majapahit through direct engagement and reflection.

For lovers of history, seekers of forgotten landmarks, or anyone drawn to East Java’s cultural heartbeat, Sumur Jobong offers more than a physical site,
