Mahatobhara Sri Mangaladevi Temple – A Divine Heritage in Mangalore

Mahatobhara Sri Mangaladevi Temple is one of the most divine and culturally rich temples in Mangalore.

I visited this temple two days ago, during the first day of the Navratri festival, and the experience was truly unforgettable.

I witnessed the temple beautifully decorated with dazzling lights and stunning floral arrangements. The alarakara (decoration of Goddess Mangaladevi) looked absolutely mesmerizing and filled the entire temple with divine energy.

Every time I visit Mangalore, I make it a point to come here, as the spiritual atmosphere is so peaceful and uplifting.

Historical Significance:

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Mangaladevi, an incarnation of Goddess Shakti, and is the very origin of the city’s name Mangalore.

Legend has it that Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was associated with the foundation of this shrine. Later, in the 9th century, the temple was renovated under the rule of King Kundavarma of the Alupa dynasty with the guidance of saints from Kerala. The temple was built in memory of Princess Mangaladevi, a devoted follower of Goddess Durga, who attained liberation here.

Highlights of the Temple

One of the oldest and most respected temples in coastal Karnataka.

The city of Mangalore is named after Goddess Mangaladevi.

Experience divine rituals, traditional architecture, and cultural heritage.

Best time to visit: Navratri/Dasara for the most vibrant celebrations.
