Maharashtra..Traditional Food..Memories...

Hi Local Guides,

Today is 1st May, ‘Maharashtra din’…A day when the state of ‘Maharashtra’ actually got identity as a state in India. Marathi is the main language spoken here but many other languages are also spoken. It’s capital is Mumbai and has a lot of variety in terms of food, people, customs and traditions. It’s one of the most vibrant states in India.

I believe that food is an important part of culture. It has a history. It has a story…

So on this occasion I thought of sharing few of my clicks of traditional Maharashtrian food dishes with you all…

  1. Thalipeeth : Its a savoury multi-grain pancake, mostly eaten at breakfast time. Its full of nutrients and tastes yummy! I make them whenever I miss my aaji (my granny) , she used to make amazing Thalipeeth and serve with a dollop of homemade butter !

  1. Puran Poli : Its a sweet flatbread prepared out of flour and the inner filling called ‘Puran’ is made up of chana daal and jaggery. Its made generally during festivals especially at Holi festival. The spicy curry that you see along with it is called ‘katachi amti’ , it is spicy one and hence complements the sweet puran poli perfectly!

  1. Pav Bhaji : This is a snack dish , a fast food item that consists of a thick vegetable curry served with a soft bread roll. Its famous Mumbai street food. The best part is you can customize and add as many veggies you want so that it turns out tasty as well as healthy ! I remember my mom adding bottle gourd in this so that we eat it… it worked each time!!!

  1. Misal Pav : Misal Pav is a traditional Maharashtrian snack recipe where sprouted legumes are cooked with spicy masala and is served with soft pav. It’s a great dish for breakfast and brunch and is healthy as well. You get the required proteins from the sprouts , carbs from the bread , fats from oil in the spicy curry and lemon adds Vitamin C to the dish, so its like a complete balanced meal.

  1. Suralicha vadya : The Suralichi Vadi is a popular Maharashtrian snack. These dainty savory little chickpea flour rolls are so soft that they melt in the mouth. The coconut adds extra flavour to it…

Ideal tea time snack or even is eaten by locals as a side dish. Its an art to make these perfectly soft rolls as they require patience and can be fragile sometimes, so need to cook with care… The result is mouth-melting !

  1. Alu vadi : Alu vadi is stuffed rolled colocasia leaves snack that is popular in Maharashtra. (Also known as patra in Gujarati cuisine). I personally love these and can eat them anytime! I learned to make this from my mom, the recipe comes generations down though!

  1. Modak : The first thing that comes to my mind after seeing modaks is “Ganapati Bappa Morya”… Yes its is generally prepared during special occasions of Lord Ganapati. The sweet filling on the inside of a modak consists of freshly grated coconut and jaggery while the outer soft shell is made from rice flour or wheat flour mixed with khava or maida flour. Ganapati festival is imcomplete without Modaks !

  1. Vada Pav : The 'Vada pav’ is a popular street food of Mumbai similar to a burger. It tastes best with a glass of cutting chai (or ginger tea)… Its also sometimes called the lifeline of Mumbai because of its easy availability and fulfilling on-the-go snack nature! I prefer Vada Pav over any snack… Yup, I am a fan… Along with tea it brings back my college day memories to me !

There are many other Maharashtrian famous dishes which depict Maharashtrian culture and people… If I prepare any of them , I will add them here… Till then, enjoy these dishes!

Thanks for showing interest in knowing about Maharashtra and it’s traditional food !

Among the many aspects that I love about Local Guides Connect, and I mentioned this in my CL2020 post, is that in one central place I am introduced to the people, culture and foods of so many different places from around the world and your interesting post about Maharashtrian traditional food dishes is a great example of this @Globe_trotter_Ish . Thank you for this. By the way, as your post is more about the food than the photos of these, I think your post would be better if it were in the Food & Drink board of Connect rather than here in Photography. As shown in the How to change the Topic of your post, you can easily do this and it’s simple to do.
