Introduction to Mahabalipuram:

Mahabalipuram is a picturesque historical coastal city in Tamil Nadu around 60 km from Chennai. One of India’s oldest cities. Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) stands at the top of the popular tourist destinations in Asia.

Mahabalipuram/Mamallapuram has its roots (records) from the Sangam age (1st century BCE). The Pallava kings ruled here from the 3rd to the 9th Century CE; the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I founded Mahabalipuram in the 7th century AD. Most of the important monuments are dated between the 7th & the 8th century AD. (Some interesting notes - Here).

The POI 36 is the parking lot, therefore it is not published separately as a POI.

The next POI No -37 is ‘Yudhishtir Chariot’, which will be published shortly.

“TIGER CAVE” Here (Saluvankuppam on East Coast Road) are different ======

TIGER-ROCK:

==========

To reach this small monument, one has to walk to the beach through the FANCY STORE’S STREET, next to SEASHORE TEMPLE, Turn right at the Thiruvalluvar Statue and walk a few meters – through the sand – then you can see this monument.

On Mahabalipuram Beach, Close to Seashore Temple, there are 3 ROCKs with Carvings.

  1. Actually, one Rock (6to 8 Feet) has ELEPHANT & HORSE Carvings on Eastside and a Tiger like shape on the Westside (Pl Refer to our Photos)
  2. The second Rock (almost the same height) facing west has a unique shape & has a resemblance to a Tiger
  3. The third one is very small (Some 2 Feet) & can be compared as a Tiger head (?)

As these are situated on the seashore and exposed to all climates, corrosion has affected the clarity of the carvings - but still, it is worth it! One can spend 10 to 15 Minutes and click a few photos; also view the beautiful surroundings.

“… it is a real pity that this rock has not been protected from the weather…”

Yes, you are absolutely right, though the are a lot of initiatives taken by State Government and Archaeological Surrey of India.

Fortunately, many monuments are protected and many are under renovation.

“… thanks to people like you, its history can be handed down to posterity…”

I sincerely hope that these posts will be helpful in the future.

Thanks for your kind words and support.

Greetings, dear @PattyBlack
