The Longewala War Memorial and Museum is unique in that it is located right on the Battlefield.
There are real bunkers and real tanks captured from the battle scattered all over this open museum.
There is also a small indoor museum that has exhibits like weapons, communication equipment, binoculars, etc.
One of the real battlefield bunkers is converted into an Audio-Visual Theatre which is free but there are queues for it.
There are battle tanks captured from the enemy during the last war.
There are also other captured vehicles like a jeep with a rocket launcher mounted on it.
Here is tank that was much intact when captured.
Here is a real watch bunker which is now a bit refurbished for the museum.
Here is the close-up view of the watch cabin.
The colors are original though and are selected to camouflage in the desert landscape.
We can go inside and watch over the real battlefield.
The Longewala battlefield on the border is in the middle of the Thar desert in India.
From inside we can view a battle tank which was left in the field by the enemy army before fleeing away or after captured or killed.
Here is the battle tanker that is still lying in the same position where it stopped last.
There is also a waiting area and a cafe in the Longewala War Memorial and Museum.
How to Reach
I saw a Longewala bus stop, so there might be some guided tours from Jaisalmer, but I traveled there in my car like most other people.
To reach here from Jaisalmer, make sure you have your vehicle fuel tank full because there is every chance of losing directions and there is no petrol pump for many kilometers. Especially if you are also visiting Tanot Rai Mata temple.
Where to Stay
I stayed in the Sagar Guest House inside the Jaisalmer Fort.
This place also has a rooftop restaurant with an amazing view of the city, the palace, and the desert.
