During a trip to Agra, I took a short detour to explore Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur, Rajasthan β and it turned out to be one of the most impressive and underrated historical sites Iβve ever visited.
Location:
Lohagarh Fort, Bharatpur, Rajasthan
Just ~55 km from Agra (approx. 1.5 hrs by road)
My Journey & Entry Experience:
I entered through one of the two grand main gates, accessible by a narrow stone bridge surrounded on all sides by a man-made lake, nearly 50x50x50 meters wide. This water barrier was designed to protect the fort, and the visual impact is stunning.
The first thing I encountered was the peaceful and spiritually significant Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple, located just before the main fort entrance.
A 5-minute walk further and I was inside the heart of the fort β now home to one of the most impressive war museums in India.
Inside the Fort β A Museum of Iron and Honor:
The fort is now partially converted into a military museum, and it is loaded with real weapons, armor, and artillery. Iβve seen museums before, but Iβve never seen this many historical arms under one roof β muskets, swords, shields, cannons, and more.
The entire structure is built using locally sourced red sandstone, giving it a commanding and earthy presence.
A Brief History of Lohagarh Fort:
- Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the legendary Jat ruler of Bharatpur.
- Unlike the more ornamental forts of Rajasthan, Lohagarh was built purely for military strength and defense.
- Known as the βIron Fort,β it withstood multiple British attacks, including the famous 1805 siege, where British forces failed to conquer it.
- Its defensive moat, thick fortifications, and strategic design made it virtually impenetrable, earning it a fearsome reputation.
- It symbolizes the resistance and resilience of the Jat kingdom, making it not just a fort, but a testament to bravery and strategy.
