Introduction

This post is about the top Local Guides amongst us actively contributing and achieving both the most points and views from photos, star (most viewed) photo, star video and star 360 sphere contributions on Maps. It includes a set of leaderboards that give some indication as to who are the “movers and shakers” out there pounding the pavements, guiding and impacting on their community the most.

If you’re new here then you may not be aware that this post forms part of a series of leaderboard posts each covering different aspects of the contributions of Local Guides. To see an index to these leaderboard posts and all posts associated with them, then this is the link you need.

For most of you Local Guides in the Northern Hemisphere, the chill in the air is unmistakable as you prepare to ring in the New Year surrounded by snowflakes and cozy blankets. But here in the land down under, it’s a whole different story! We’re basking in the sun with temperatures soaring high as we dive headfirst into summer, catch-ups with family and friends, lots of food, BBQs, elbow bending and chin waging, and then of course, surfing or just sunbaking on the beach. While some parts of the country are battling blazing bushfires, the festive spirit remains unshaken. With only three days left until Christmas, it’s a celebration of warmth, joy, and community.

Against that background, what better way to capture the essence of this unique Aussie Christmas than with the cover image? Picture this: Sunburnt Santa, a Local Guide himself, chilling on his surfboard with both feet in the water on a sun-soaked beach checking out the last few epic photos he snapped. It’s the perfect symbol of the season and everything that makes this community so incredible. Here’s to the magic of the holidays—whether you’re in a snowy wonderland or soaking up the sun, we’re all in this together!

Readme - Reading the Movers & Shakers leaderboards (November, 2024)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details about the Top 100 leaderboards see the leaderboard documentation and the Leaderboard System’s online context-sensitive help information.

1. Simply stated, the term Movers & Shakers in this post is used to describe the Local Guides that have achieved the most in terms of overall Local Guide points, photo views and star views over the past month. Therefore, the leaderboards in this post indicate how active each participating Local Guide has been over the past month as well as the performance of their photos, videos and 360 spheres, and their respective stars in terms of views over the same period.

   To explain the different metrics used in the Movers & Shakers leaderboards we will use the following simple example. Sarah, a Level 8 Local Guide, uses the T100 System and updates her data on the 28th of each month. For simplicity of explanation, she updates her data every 30 days! The following table summarizes her key data as at 28 April and 28 May::

   (a) The Delta Points is the value of the points earned by a Local Guide over the past month. In this way, Sarah’s current Delta Points is 4,000 [ 24,000 - 20,000 ]^*.

   (b) The % Delta Points is the value of the points earned by a Local Guide over the past month expressed as a percentage. Therefore, Sarah’s current % Delta Points is 20% [ (4,000/20,000)*100 ].

   (c) The Delta Views is the absolute value of the total photo views gained by a Local Guide over the past month. Thus, Sarah’s Delta Views for that month is 1.8m [ 16.8m - 15m ]^*.

   (d) The % Delta Views is the value of the total views gained by a Local Guide over the past month expressed as a percentage. Therefore, Sarah’s current % Delta Views is 12% [ (1.8m/15m)*100 ].

   (e) The Delta Views/Photo is the average photo views gained per photo by a Local Guide in the past month and for comparative purposes, this gives a simple measure of the overall quality of a Local Guide’s photos in terms of views gained per photo; the higher the Delta Views/Photo the higher the quality of the photos! Therefore, Sarah has a current Delta Views/Photo of 2,000 [ 1.8m/900 ].

   (f) The Delta Views/Day is the average photo views gained per day by a Local Guide in the past month and for comparative purposes, this is another metric that gives a simple measure of the overall quality of a Local Guide’s photos in terms of views gained per day; the higher the Delta Views/Day the higher the quality of the photos! Therefore, Sarah has a current Delta Views/Day of 60,000 [ 1.8m/30 ].

   (g) The Delta Star Views is similar to the Delta Views however in this case, it represents the views gained over the past month by a Local Guide’s most viewed photo, or star photo. Therefore, Sarah’s Delta Star Views is 30,000 [ 4.06m - 4.03m ]^*

   (h) The Delta Star Views/Day is simply the average Delta Star Views per day over the past month. Therefore, Sarah’s star photo has a Delta Star Views/Day of 1,000 [ 30,000 / 30 ]. This metric gives a simple up-to-date measure of the quality of our star photo in terms of views gained per day^*.

2. Local Guides that haven’t updated their data in the previous month and in time for the leaderboards posted here will not be included in the Movers & Shakers leaderboards.

3. Local Guides that updated their contributions data in the previous month but not in the month prior to that will also be excluded in this month’s Movers & Shakers because their Delta Points could possibly be across more than one month and this would unfairly distort the idea behind the Movers & Shakers which looks at the points and photo views movement (i.e. the delta points) in the one month.

4. New Leaderboard participants will not be included in this month’s Movers and Shakers leaderboards simply because they don’t have a prior month’s history.

5. Local Guides that have not updated their star photo, video and/or 360 sphere details in the month covered by the respective leaderboards will be excluded from the Average Views/Day leaderboard.

6. In summary, the Movers & Shakers leaderboards only include those Local Guides who regularly update and have especially done so over the last couple of months. It’s all about creating that level playing field and comparing apples with apples.

7. Where shown, [ ] around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the Local Guide is a new participated on the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards.

8. An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.

9. Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.

10. Hovering over a Local Guide’s username will display the integration number that integrates that Local Guide’s details on the Leaderboards System and Connect; the umbilical chord if you will between the two disparate systems.

11. Selecting a Connect Usernames will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.

12. The data for the leaderboards in this post was read at 1313 on Friday, December 6, 2024 (UTC).

13. Local Guides included in the leaderboards must check their entries for any errors. If you should find any errors or omissions, please add the details in a comment on this post.

    • Please note that making comparisons using metrics such as delta points and delta views must be done carefully. In my view it is better to use points per day or views per day for comparative purposes and you will find these in the Core Vitals section of the T100 Leaderboards System!

This is the final in the leaderboard posts for November and the last to be posted before this year ends and with only 3 days to Christmas Day, the year is certainly now racing to a close. I apologise that since October, the Leaderboards have been posted much later in the month but as you will appreciate, there have been lots of recent changes and with that, challenges in producing them. However, we’re now almost back on track and my hope is that the December Leaderboards will be posted in much earlier in the new month.

Please do your usual checking and let me know by way of a comment should you find any errors or ommissions.

As well as the monthly leaderboards for December which will be posted in early Janury, around mid-January the Top Google Maps Local Guide Movers & Shakers for 2024 will be announced with a strong possibility of a number of new categories. Thanks @TerryPG for your fast checking and picking up the duplications. We’ve had this duplicate problem before so I’ll have to dig in and see if I can stop it from happening.

Yes the Movers & Shakers leaderboard posts have become increasingly popular by many and they certainly do give an interesting perspective on who is doing and achieving what in the month. Then of course we have the annual Movers & Shakers leaderboards which take the broader annual vew. I find both very interesting and can’t wait for the 2024 Movers & Shakers to get the overall view over the current year.

Thanks @AdamGT ,an Auchincloss No.1 that’s a first! It shows that the Camino de Santiago continues to be real busy with hungry pilgrims looking at where to eat. This year is a record year with over 497,000 pilgrims getting their Compostelas. My video is in featured position so there’s potential for this continue to rise. Well done all those that our featured and keep posting those videos.

Adam, it seems the Stars are not shining very brightly, or the LGs are not updating their stats. With just 3 Star Photos, 9 Star Videos, and 1 Star 360, something seems to be wrong. I know my Star Photo number hasn’t changed for many months, but the Star Video continues to show a modest increase almost monthly.

Do any of the other Local Guides have a thought on what’s happening here?

From personal experience, as well as the best albergues, pilgrims certainly need to know the best places to eat @MarkAuchincloss so well done and fingers crossed that with record breaking Camino de Santiago peligrinoes you continue to have great success with your video(s).
