Let’s meet up on Sunday July 25 at 1:00PM in Pittsburgh! You may RSVP at the eventbrite link for this event. This event is also found under “upcoming meet-ups” pages on Connect! If there’s enough interest, I may create a virtual meet up in August on Google Meet.

WHO: A meetup for Google Maps Local Guides of any level. Let’s meet outdoors and enjoy the fresh air together, while sharing our stories and ideas about Google Maps and being a Local Guide. (Bonus: grab a bite or drink at a concession stand in Schenley Plaza).

WHERE: Schenley Plaza in Oakland, under the white tent. Let’s find a table and chat! Parking on the street is free on Sunday. Look for MonaLisa, who is going to wear red that day so you can spot her easily. (Again, feel free to grab food or drink at a concession stand at Schenley Plaza).

TIME: Sunday July 25, 2021 from 1:00PM to 2:30PM. We don’t have to meet the entire time. I just want to reserve enough time for us to chat and share ideas.

AGENDA:

  1. Share our stories on what got us started with google maps and why did we become a local guide

  2. Discuss how we can improve google maps results in the Pittsburgh Area (i.e. add photos, improve location pins, edit business phone numbers and websites…)

  3. Share tips on how to snap the best photos and videos at a location and upload to google maps

  4. Discuss new ideas and suggestions for Google Maps (we can even submit a post on the “ideas exchange” page on Local Guide Connect)

Hi everyone! I’m a level 8 local guide in Pittsburgh, PA and I believe it’s time for a physical or virtual meet up in Pittsburgh! I notice a possible meetup back in 2017 but not sure if that ever happened based on the comments in that thread. I see other locations around the world have had successful local guide meet ups, so what say you we make this happen in Pittsburgh, either in person or virtually?!?!

Note: I realize it may take awhile for people to find this post, but no worries I will check this periodically and see who responses and who would like to meet up. Thank you

Hey @leung1245 ! Wishing you all the best for your call for a meet-up in Pittsburgh, in real life or virtually! Hopefully other Local Guides in the area or nearish enough will see your post!

Some tips that I can suggest, if you haven’t tried them out yet:

  • search Connect for “pittsburgh” and find Local Guides who are from the area (you can sometimes guess from their posts, comments or profile) and tag them using the @ so that they will see a notification
  • add a cover photo to your post so that there’s a nice clear banner advertising your call for Local Guides in Pittsburgh. I use Canva as the free service is pretty versatile. If you haven’t made a cover photo before, it’s super simple with Canva. Here’s a quick how-to for a simple cover photo.
    • Sign up for Canva (it’s free). Note: I have zero affiliations to Canva except that I’m a paid subscriber to their Pro service.
    • Create a design using this resolution 1280x720
    • Pick a nice background (you can search for “pittsburgh” and see if that comes up with anything useful or just pick a generic colourful background)
    • Add the text “Calling all Local Guides from Pittsburgh” or something to that effect… obviously it’s entirely up to you.
    • Voila. Done. Just download it and then edit this current post to include the graphic at the top of your post. Adding a cover photo is a great way to grab attention!

I’m in for a real meetup. We’ve had several throughout the years and most of the info on them was lost when Google Plus was killed.

Hi @ivanrussell thanks for replying and sharing your interest! Since it’s Fourth of July weekend and most people are celebrating with family and friends, I will be patient and wait another week for responses. After that, we can discuss when and how to meet up.

** that sucks that a lot of the old information and posts were lost due to Google Plus phased out.

I went to a Local Guides event in Shadyside a few years ago, but no one showed up. Maybe there could be a virtual one?

Hi @skeetidot and @FRANKC04 Thanks for your responses! Since it’s holiday weekend, let’s wait until next Friday July 9th to give people a chance to respond to my call for a meet up. Then we will discuss date, time, location, and either in person or virtual (or both options if there’s enough interest). Thanks!

Hello everyone that has responded so far @LC100baby @skeetidot @FRANKC04 @ivanrussell . Let’s set up an in-person meet up outdoors, I don’t want to have you waiting forever. I’m thinking Schenley Plaza in Oakland under the large white tent, on a Sunday afternoon. How about Sunday July 25 in the afternoon? Once I get your confirmation, I will create the event. I will dress in red (my favorite color) so it’s easy for you to find me on that day.

I’m in on the 25th, not sure what color I will wear but I definitely have shorts on as I do every single day of the year. And most likely a t-shirt from a band or some bar.

@LC100baby I don’t see why not? Just make sure they understand the premise of our meetup and they are comfortable talking about google maps and local guides-related stuff. You don’t have to bring anything, but feel free to bring lunch or a snack to munch on during our meeting since it would be lunch time.
