Likes for Review compared with view

I was quite sure that something does not work correct with the likes on GoogleMaps. Now I got a screenshot for my question.

Here is a review. Has been seen twice but have 3 likes.

I have as well other reviews with no views but likes…

Of course it could be that the likes are not updated in the way like the views, but I really see as well on the reviews (No more now) that I have had much less shown total likes, than on the single reviews summarized.

I know this late update for photo counts and this is maybe due to the amount, but I have not so many reviews.

That’s an interesting catch @TorM

Nevertheless, it would be doubtful whether we would come to know the precise working.

However, the following is my guess.

Whenever a viewer hits the like button, the count updates immediately.

But, the views are counted on the basis of pull from the server.

Here, I believe the program does that aggregation in a batch mode and that can take some time.

Nevertheless, after some finite period, the updated view count does emerge on each review.

Hello @C_T I see you comment quite a lot here. You seem to have a great insight in ‘how’ things work @Google. Can you tell me a bit more about yourself as you seem to be quite a mystery. Not mentioning your name when people ask and more.

I’m not a person who’s in to conspiracy theories but my best guess is you are some sort of “incognito Google employee”.
You also must be the person with most SOLUTIONS on his name, meaning your assumptions are often right.
Like you say so often, I don’t know if it’s true, as Google works in mysterious ways.

Thanks for the compliments @Erik_van_den_Ham
However, I am neither a pseudo-employee nor a coder.
Nevertheless, I did oversee some software projects related to Manufacturing.

The devotion for the technology arose to avoid the dreaded response from the IT team on any software related issues: “I can’t see the exact reason for your problem. Backup your data & then I will format your machine”.
Then keep on struggling for months for the lost data!

I don’t like likes!

As long as they are clearly not counted correctly and because Google allows self-likes!

Are self likes working, @MortenCopenhagen ?

Sounds funny, but I never tried.

Btw, like for connect, you can give likes directly from the profile of a local guide, without really reading the reviews, while for the view count my feeling is that you have to read the reviews from the Business Listing.

This is a side effect of the “following” function, for people who is notified about your reviews, or simply check your profile @TorM

Personally I don’t like this way to proceed, and I already asked to remove the function in Connect, because I believe that we need to read a post before to give a like. BTW, my idea for this change wasn’t approved :grimacing:

Hi @ErmesT

Yes, Self-likes are alive and kicking on Google Maps.

On desktop go to the list of your reviews and start clicking Like (no need to read them first!). Liking your photos is not super easy on a desktop.

In the Android app, just find your list of photos and reviews and you can like them all right there from the lists.

I found this out a long time ago when I noticed a profile where all reviews and photos had exactly one like. Yikes!

I promise I did unlike my own photos and reviews while testing it was still possible!

Cheers

I too had noticed the self like feature on Google Maps a long time ago but dared not to attempt even once for I knew one thing for sure that somewhere someone is definitely observing and noting this pattern resulting in genuine Likes I got also being looked upon as some kind of hacking for self-promotion.

Today I am much satisfied and happy with the 75 genuine likes for the 300+ reviews.

This in fact lead me to some pondering on my part as to which reviews were more appealing to users, which subsequently revealed some interesting insights as to what users are looking for in a review.

I have tried to summarize those in the South Asian context in this article.

Hello @C_T thank you for your answer that explains a lot! So good you see it as a compliment and it is in fact that!

Yeah some specialists aren’t so special There are a lot of people in IT that are trying not sure if they should be called specialists. Don’t talk to me on data loss I had my faid=r deal of troubles with that.

Sorry @MortenCopenhagen just gave you one. To me the likes are often a confirmation for reading a post. It doesn’t mean I agree or disagree with it just that I’ve seen it. I’m sort of sick of the ‘like hunters’ (I can name a few but I won’t) they never have anything useful to tell you on your post(s) and often just like them hoping for return on their “investment”

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham

I was referring to likes on Google Maps. Here on Connect, I also use likes to acknowledge that I have seen and read a reply.

Cheers

Oh I thought it was meant in general so for both @MortenCopenhagen my bad. I think it’s almost only LG Connect people who give likes. Random people hardly give you one (IMHO).

Uho I am new here and this problem of view counts sounds familiar…

Many social media platforms experienced this, and problems solved after mass compliants by users.

Just saying we need to complain in a requestful manner, asking the big daddy at Alphabet to take a peep see and offer a true investigation into these matters of numbers not reflecting truthfully.
