Like drinking hot water?

Local Guides, do you too? I found this YouTube video:

And it got me thinking – Is this an “only Chinese” thing to do?* @Velvel @StephenAbraham , do you drink hot water every day too?*

Are there other cultures that enjoy drinking “hot water?” @RosyKohli , do Indians enjoy drinking hot water as much as tea or chai tea?

@TsekoV @ErmesT – did you pick up this cultural habit when living in China?

When I was growing up, my family would drink “hot water," either in the morning or after dinner, besides drinking (hot) tea at home. At a restaurant (not Chinese), my mom, aunts, and grandma would order hot water with a slice of lemon with or after their meal as their beverage because they would not drink non-Chinese tea,

I did not realize this was a “Chinese” thing to do – drinking a cup of “hot water” – until I was out of college, working in an office.

In the morning before lunch, I would go to the office kitchen and fill up my cup with plain, nothing added to it, “hot water.” After lunch before starting work again, I would also go back to the kitchen, fill up my cup with hot water, and go back to my desk.

Then there is the late afternoon cup of hot water “pick me up” to get me motivated, to continue working in front of my computer.

I drink hot water year-round, just like it is stated in the above video. For me, it is soothing, relaxing to drink hot water. I like the feel of the hot steam from my cup on my face. Drinking hot water reduces my stress levels, makes my tummy warm—a calming mechanism. I enjoy holding my “hot” mug with both hands, especially if the A/C is super cold.

Hot water, with nothing added to it, tastes good! I also like the smell of hot water as I drink it. Yes, hot water does have a smell!

Over the years, I have had conversations about why I enjoy drinking “just hot water” with friends who are not Chinese here in America. Some have told me that it is odd while watching me drink it. Where is the flavor? Just water! I have had been asked throughout my life – “What does it (hot water) taste like?

With the Pandemic, I am drinking hot water more than any other beverage every day. Again, I think it is my subconscious wanting to find peace under these very stressful times.

Do you drink hot water daily? Or what is your daily beverage of choice?

Cheers,

Karen

@KarenVChin Yes I do! At time just warm or hot water, in slow sips throughout the day. And sometimes, I would just throw in some loose tea leaves just to flavor the water.

And the wonderful Ceylonese tea leaves given by @IlankovanT still have lots of balance after almost 2 years. I’m still drinking that. bit by bit.

Hello @KarenVChin

1-year before I used to drink only normal water but from last 1 year, I am drinking only hot water(even my family).

Early morning I will drink a glass of Hot water with pure lemon juice (my family also does this) and nothing else.

Even I have seen very fewer people who always drink hot water but this is good for health and feels refreshing especially in cold environments.

Many Indians prefer Tea as a beverage and I prefer Green Tea as a beverage.

Many thanks for sharing this post.

I generally drink a lot of hot water but it usually has tea or tisane in it @KarenVChin - plenty of people seem to drink hot water here without anything in it, its seen often enough that you notice but not so infrequently that it would be unusual.

You can get fresh tea in USA its grown in South Carolina. I just did a search and the place I visited is still there https://g.page/charleston_tea?share

Hey @KarenVChin ,

Thank you for tagging me here.

Before going to China, I would only drink cold water or if I wanted hot water it would be a cup of tea.

I was really surprised when arriving in China that everyone, everywhere consumed hot water. You could find the hot water dispensers everywhere. I got used to drinking hot water a lot while in China and had my favorite bottle with me everyday.

I know drinking hot water is very healthy for the body and it is definitely a good habit. I haven’t had in a while hot water only, but I like drinking different types of tea or squeezing a whole lemon in the hot water.

P.S.: I remember during my first months in China, my international classmates would joke about hot water and say that whenever you get sick, drinking hot water would help, just what doctors in China often used to tell us.

Lemon is quite popular with my Chinese workmates @TsekoV some also use lime. I introduced one of the girls who liked lemon to a spoon of honey with the lemon and now she always has that :).

I drink “water at room temperature” often. I drink hot water when preparing to sing.

Or if I am sick.

Lagos is hot! I wonder if there is anyone here who drinks hot water during the day.

@KarenVChin

Being a long time I have read from you, happy to read from you, Karen.

How are you and your Twins, right?

Thanks for the unusual post @KarenVChin , and for tagging me in there.

Although the human body is 60% water, it is usually not considered “water” good enough to be classified as “food” :slightly_smiling_face:

As for my experience in China in the 1990s, it was impossible not to notice that everyone was drinking hot water. All the people in the factory used a glass container (usually a jar of a well-known brand of instant coffee) filled with hot water, with a tea leaf inside. We were very curious about this, so we asked why, and we were told that the tap water might not be drinkable, so everyone preferred to boil it before drinking it.

As an option, they advised us to drink beer, and we’ve been following that rule ever since, with generous drinks of Tsingtao.
Eventually they caused me kidney stones :disappointed:

At home I drink a lot of water, especially at room temperature, while for the hot one I use my own version: Coffee or tea.
I like to drink tea early in the morning, or in the early afternoon. A cup of hot liquid relaxes me and my body feels better.
Perhaps, if there had been hot water dispensers at the time, as mentioned by @TsekoV , I think I would have started drinking it by then

Dear @KarenVChin

In some cases drinking hot water is beneficial for the body. No flavor is found in hot water, as is found in normal water. Normally we drink hot water in winter. Moreover, we drink tea and coffee throughout the year.

I have never tried hot water before and will seriously consider doing this, though with a bit of fresh-cut lemon juice :lemon:

In India many people to remain fit drink hot water with lemon juice & honey as.drink

Interesting topic and video @KarenVChin

I don’t drink hot water everyday, but I always try (not to forget) to drink a cup of hot water when I wake up exactly before doing a morning exercise. It is said that drinking hot water in the morning is good for a detox. It makes by whole body soothing as well. As a coffee fan, I mostly prefer hot black coffee rather than the cold one. Since I live in Indonesia with two seasons : summer and rainy. When the summer comes and the weather is so hot, I definitely will prefer the cold beverage.

I just knew from the video that in the ancient time, there was “laohuzao” , a shop that only served hot water. Wow… Even hot water was sold back then :joy:

And just like @TsekoV said, drinking hot water can be a good medicine. When you have a sore throat, drink lots of hot water might help!

Hi @KarenVChin ,

very interesting post, I never thought to the reasons behind this and why, although now I really remember this practice, and I even had it too, everytime I have been in China. We don’t have that culture of course, for us hot water is tea or chamomile… and I drink every day a full bottle of 1,5lt of water which I have on my desk, room temperature.

However I have to say that I know many people who drink hot water with lemon in the morning, I like that too but I usually do it cold while there is a general practice for warm for the same reasons mentioned in the video, being healthy for the body and prepare the stomach in the morning with a kind of sonification. Do you know this practice as well @ErmesT ? I see you didn’t mention it but I know both in the south and here so it isn’t definitely a local regional habitude.

And I agree with the fact that the cold shocking water will make you only more thirsty, that’s true actually, the more it is warm and the more you want to drink after you start with very a very cold one hehe.

In the morning, @Harsha_Reddy , especially the weekends, it can be zen-like for me, to hold my cup of hot water and sip it leisurely as I read the news on my iPad. The hot water flowing down into my tummy is both calming and relaxing.

Good for your throat too! Washes everything away in your mouth.

I find drinking hot water in summer is refreshing— hear me out! There is no shock to your system.

Cheers,

Karen
