Steamed buns (also known as baozi, mantou, or in Indonesia, we called it bakpao) are loved by many Asian people. Since Christmas is coming up on, I decided to shape my steamed buns into Christmas’ characters, such as Santa Claus, Christmas tree, and also the snowman that will never melt for this Christmas because Indonesia has no winter
I made them with a sweet filling, but you can certainly filled them with savory filling too. Making them is as fun as eating them. They could be a good idea if you want something a bit different than traditional cookie boxes. A tutorial video with English description is included for your reference.
Dough Ingredients:
300 g low-protein flour
15 g tapioca flour
50 g sugar
1¼ tsp dry yeast
½ tsp baking soda
150 ml lukewarm water
20 g white butter
Filling:
Chocolate sprinkles
Directions:
Mix all the dough ingredients, except white butter, and knead until well combine.
Follow by the white butter and knead until the smooth dough is achieved.
Divide the dough into 8 portions. Add a few drops of food coloring on each of them and continue to knead until the color is even.
Take one main dough (50 g), stretch it, and place in the filling. Wrap it up, then decorate with dough to form a character.
Place each finished bun onto a steamed bun paper.
Leave them to rest for 40 minutes to rise slightly.
Steam the buns on a low-medium heat for 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat and they are ready to eat! Best served when warm, reheat by steaming if it is needed.
Too cute to eat? But again, nothing makes me happier than the smell of freshly baked holiday sweets.
Thank you for your compliment @Sheetal_RS I’m just an amateur cook, still far from a professional chef By the way, have you tried making bao buns at home?
@Lusianaa WOW! That is so amazing. A truly local adaptation of Christmas into its local fare.
I was wondering if you’ve heard of my #ChristmasInMyCity 2021 world wide challenge? Thought I’d mention it in case you’d like to participate this year.
