Visiting a huge cave which is naturally formed and once the home of ancient human beings must be very interesting. We are talking about “Borra Caves” which is situated approx. 90 km north from Vizag city in the Ananthagiri hill range of Eastern Ghat. There are two ways to go to Bora Caves from Vizag City – one is by train and the other is by car or bus. The Train journey is very enjoyable because maximum part of the rail route lies on the hill area and there are many tunnels throughout the journey. Tourists who go to Borra Caves also go to Araku Valley. It is on the way from Vizag to Araku Valley. Many tourists go to Borra Caves by train and return to Vizag by car. Actually the scenic beauty of the total path is amazing. There is also a package—tour conducted by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department.
It is believed that the cave is 150 million year old and formed naturally. According to anthropologists, they have found stone tools of Middle Paleolithic culture. The tools are 30,000 to 50,000 years old and it is a proof of human habitation. The constant water flow reacted with lime stone made different shapes hanging from the roof inside the cave like mother & child, Rishi’s beard, crocodile, human brain etc. There is a naturally formed Shiva Linga inside the cave. Every year on the occasion of Shiva Ratri the local tribes come to the cave to worship of Lord Shiva. The tribals who frequent near Borra Caves believe in various legends regarding these caves.
Another interesting attraction for the tourists of Borra Caves is the “Bamboo Chicken”. Bamboo chicken is a delicious food of that area. It is a delicious tribal food. They stuff chicken pieces inside a bamboo shoot with local herbs without oil and cook it into the fire.
Recently the place has been used as the shooting location for the Bengali adventure movie “Yeti Obhijan”, adding another note of attraction for the visitors from Bengal.
