One of my favorite weekend activities is being a part-time English tutor. On the weekend, I teach private English classes, including grammar, speaking, and professional English. What makes these classes special is that we don’t stay inside a traditional classroom, we learn in cafés around Semarang. Students can even choose their favorite café, which gives me a wonderful opportunity to explore new places while helping others improve their English.
This weekend, our class took place at Treetales Coffee & Eatery by Taman Teduh in Tembalang, Semarang, and I absolutely loved the atmosphere. The café has three floors with air-conditioned indoor seating and outdoor areas overlooking the beautiful Tembalang scenery. There’s also a cozy rooftop and even a self-photo studio, making it a unique and complete place for studying, working remotely, chatting with friends, or simply taking beautiful photos
However, what made this visit truly memorable wasn’t just the café, it was my student.
He is 50 years old and currently works as a manager in a private company. Many people at that stage of their career might simply wait for retirement, but not him. He continues to invest in himself by learning English because he dreams of pursuing better career opportunities in an international company.
His enthusiasm amazes me. He never misses a class, always comes prepared, and is genuinely excited to learn. Watching someone remain curious and determined after decades of working is incredibly inspiring.
As a tutor, moments like this remind me why I love teaching. It’s not only about explaining grammar or practicing conversations. It’s about sharing knowledge, encouraging confidence, and supporting someone else’s growth.
This experience also reminded me that learning has no age limit. Whether you’re 15, 30, or 50, it’s never too late to build new skills, chase bigger dreams, or start something new.
I’m grateful that teaching English allows me to combine three things I love: learning, sharing knowledge, and discovering amazing local cafés in Semarang.
