Hello @pozzolana no offence is taken on your comment as it is your opinion. Anyone is entitled to have their own thoughts and opinions and no has to agree or disagree with them. Although I see your point I do not agree.
I’m more on @AdamGT point of view. It’s not the view count that matters so much it’s how this translates to “if it’s seen that many times” it must be helpful to someone. All this is based on assumptions and not on hard facts as Google AI works in mysterious ways.

One thing I recently discovered was that why my best viewed picture is just that. It’s not only shown at the POI I placed it on but also at the city I took it, the province it’s in and even the POI of the Netherlands has this picture on it. The Google AI somehow selected it to be featured at all those POI’s and therefore it will be seen more often as all these count as views to that one picture. I have no idea if some handpicking or human interference is also part of the process.

For me having my picture(s) there somehow convinces met they have enough quality to be selected. The amount of view counts leave me relatively unbothered.

1. Dear @AdamGT I like this idea. Even though I’m an extremely shy person, I post my “star photo” because I’m a real fan of this community. So here is my star photo (see below).
2. The photo was taken in a zoo in Austria, Haag, near my hometown Steyr and shows a bear in his enclosure.
3. The photo was uploaded 25. July 2020 (Photo’s meta data Date created).
4. This is definitely not my best photo. I just had the opportunity for one attempt because of the many visitors and my family who really wanted to go on. It’s the worst of my photos.
5. I have no idea why it’s my „star photo“. I’ve seen much better photos of the same bear and it´s a really small zoo, I can’t explain why it has so many clicks.

7. My smartphone camera is broken, therefore I always use my Nikon D850.

I have to say that I personally don’t like seeing any animal kept in cages or enclosures but your star photo is what it is. 2. This is a storefront capture of a local Italian restaurant.
3. This was taken Thursday, September 12, 2019 (referenced Google Photos).
4. Definitely not my best photo, but it does give a clear view of the restaurant.
5. It’s a good display of the restaurant, and at the time of writing the cover photo on Google.
6. Being the cover photo, it definitely helps with the growth.
7. I used a Google Pixel 3 XL.
8. 170 photos to date.
9. 2,142,520 total views to date.

1. Below is my most viewed photo & a screenshot of the views captured

2. The Maps Category this picture apperas under is ‘General Store’

3. I uploaded this image in January 2020

4. No I don’t believe it is my ‘best’ photo. Although its quite eye catching and an artistic shot of what happens to be a old style general store in a small country town

5. I think it’s my ‘Star’ photo because the location of this general store is approx 40 mins drive from the nearest city/town and a review of a general store/Cafe and pub this far out of town where the phone reception is quite poor could be very valuable to someone thinking of making the drive. I also believe its a star photo because it shoes the venue in a good light and looking attractive and clean. This would appeal to visitors thinking of driving 40 mins into ‘the sticks’ to take a gamble on a restuarant that’s in a very small country/rural town.

6. I think important features that contribute to photo view stats are

a) How long it has been online

b) How many other reviews and photo contributions exist in that particular locale

c) That the photo is a ‘feature’ photo

7. I used a Samsung Note9 + camera phone for the photo

8. I have only shared 30 photos

Best Shot - This is one of the shots taken for Shanghai Tianma Country Club - It is the first private country club in the Shanghai basin which has 27 holes of professional golf play, 300 villa mansions 2 soccer field, indoor olympic swimming and external horizon pool, built by Gilbert B Mar , Chairman of the Universal Group of Companies

4. As this photo was taken to be used for website marketing and back office and the site was involved with real estate, this photo had more views due to the wide shot of the front lake and adjacent housing. I was commissioned to build the first website for Tianma Country Club and it is in its 5th reiteration by other administrators…

5. I felt @Tranceme explained a star photo perfectly and have gained permission to quote her as follows"A “Star Photo” is Where the imagery connects to ideas that come together creating moments that touches some personal experience in a truly interesting or beautiful and moving"

6. I used a Canon HS50 for this photo and currently use Samsung Note 10+

1. My star photo.

2. It is a branch of one of the banks with the largest financial movement in Colombia; This branch is located in the fourth most populated city in our country, the city of Barranquilla.

3. I took this photo on September 1, 2018 , I remember the date because it was the day of the funeral of an uncle (I live in Cartagena, 100 kilometers away). I estimate that it was uploaded to Google Maps in mid-September 2018.

4. It was a photo taken while walking down that street, without programming it … I am surprised by its great success, I consider that it is not one of my best photos.

5. There are several factors for its success: it is a very populated city (more than 1,000,000 inhabitants), it is a very important bank, it was placed as the main photo for many months (not currently).

6. Factors for the success of a photo: the site (very important companies, highly visited places), the city (populous cities), the upload time of the photo I do not consider so fundamental (my star photo is not yet 2 years old) .

7. The photo was taken with a Huawei P10 phone.

8. I have uploaded 332 photos so far.

9. Total number of views of my 332 photos is 7449548 views as of today, march 29, 2022

Hello all

Believe it or not, today, 31 August 2020 at 10:15 EST, while updating the leaderboards I hit the 100,000 character limit for posts on Connect (my guess is that it is counting HTML characters). I had to make some quick changes to the post to add the latest entries by @babelfisch , @Blad3101 , @DarkWatch , @DomicianoFirmino , @HEMProperty and @Robert24 . The post is now just under the 100,000 character limit which means that something dramatic has to happen if we’re going to add any more entries. This will require some thought! Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Anyway, for now, the Leaderboards have been updated and as usual, for convenience changes are indicated by against the new entries. The updates were made based on the information provided by the new entrants who should check that I have correctly entered their details and let me know if there are any errors or omissions! If you supplied your photo data but are not included in the Leaderboards, then you have not supplied all the information asked for or I’m still waiting on something from you. If this is the case then please re-read the post and update your comment/entry with the missing information. If you don’t supply all the information required then this makes my job much more difficult as I have to spend time and hunt for what’s missing.

Notes:

1. This is a long post! If you’ve been disciplined with how you submitted your Maps photo details and have all the information in one comment then to make things easier for you to find your entry simply click on your Connect Username in any table and should end up at your comment with your photo data (if not let me know).
2. If your entry is messy and all over the place, spread across several comments then why don’t you take this opportunity to tidy it up and put it all in the one comment. If you do this then I will be able to add you to the convenient list of users as mentioned in point 3 above.
