Lake Toba : Admired it at the first sight

Danau Toba (Indonesian word for Lake Toba) is a lake, the large one, located in North Sumatera of Indonesia, occupying the caldera of a supervulcano. Its surface area is about 1,130 km2 with average depth around 500 metres…

I reached the lake from Medan, the capital city of North Sumatera Province, by car.

It was one day in May 2008, when for the first time I visited Lake Toba. I was there and yes, I admired the lake.

The lake was so clean and its water was so blue.

An island floats in the center of the lake, it is called Pulau Samosir (Indonesian word for Samosir Island). I Reached the island by a ferry boat.

Life goes peacefully and happily on this lake. Children happily dived into the water to get coins thrown out by the ferry passengers, fisherman went fishing, ferry boats busily carried passengers from Ajibata dock on the mainland to Tomok dock on Samosir Island or vice versa, or to many other tourism spots there.

When I was on the boat and still waiting for sail, some kids at outside shouted to the ferry’s passenger : “Sir, please throw your coin into the water…” and, suddenly the kids jumped into the lake water and came up again with their mouth full of coins…wow…

An old man sailed on a very simple motor boat alone, cruised the very wide Lake Toba, for the sake of living life…away from crowd, surrounded by beautiful nature

Enjoy its wonderful panorama when you stare at the mainland, the Samosir Island, or even the lake surface.

Landed on Tomok dock and realized that I stepped into Batak land. Knew it through the language used there, from architecture style of the houses, and of course from its specific food and drink : saksang (one of Batak typical cuisine, which I like the most) and tuak (a Batak typical alcoholic drink, which is made from palm tree).
