Korean Fried Chicken in Malaysia - a worthwhile experience

Fried chicken is definitely one of our favorite food in Malaysia, be it for a snack or for a meal, everyone loves the crunchy tasty taste and texture of freshly fried chicken. Since the last few years, a new trend of Korean style fried chicken is slowly taking over hearts of fried chicken lovers in the country. On top of just a crispy fried chicken, it’s then laden with sticky sweet and spicy sauce, which is how Koreans love to eat theirs.

I have seen photos of many people eating these online and in videos, but I didn’t manage to try it until just recently. I wanted to see for myself what the craze was all about. So I went to visit the most popular Korean fried chicken chain in Malaysia, KyoChon which has many branches around the city.

[Picture below] Of course it then became a challenge for me to put to the test what their signature motto was “Chicken like you’ve never had before”. It was a tall claim for me to verify through my personal experience  .

[Picture below] The table was set quite beautifully, and from at least the marketing material, it says each piece of fried chicken is fried on order and takes at least 15 minutes to prepare. I won’t compare that much to fast food places where one can just order and go which everything precooked. So I was willing to wait, at least for my first experience of freshly fried Korean chicken. It did take about 25 minutes to arrive since it was a little busy during that time.

[Picture below] I had the garlic soy flavored chicken, and the spicy chicken. Both were equally good. The batter was thin, crispy and light. And the sauce on top gave an extra layer of flavor to the chicken. Which was then accompanied with rice, a small salad and iced tea.

Overall, it was a good experience. Chicken was good tasting, although I won’t say it’s worth the extra premium price for the food. The environment was good which I would say help justify the extra price.

Nice Story of visiting the restaurant and I like this restaurant’s table Layout.

However, I am vegetarian.

Your chicken looks like our vegetarian Indian Snacks Bhajiya.

Looks Spicy and crispy.

Hey @StephenAbraham ,

Thanks for sharing your experience and honest opinion with us. The chicken looks tasty although I prefer it with potatoes on the side. Did you order something to bite on while you were waiting for the main course?

Haha @KishorMali I agree with you on that, it’s more like Gobi Manchurian :innocent:

Ah…! here comes my favorite, fried chicken.

What a break from the regular Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I have been to Korean restaurants out here in Delhi where I live but never saw anything like that on the menu.

Do you know the Korean name for this specific dish? @StephenAbraham

Yup.

Exactly.

So envious that you got to eat Korean fried chicken @StephenAbraham ! Just a mini personal recommendation - if they offer yangnyom chicken, make sure you try that! The sweet and spicy sticky sauce makes the meat taste heavenly!

P.S. Did you know that Koreans have a made up word for the combination of chicken and beer (which is a preferred combo for a lot of people) - ChiMaek 치맥 - which comes from Chicken 치킨 and Maekchu 맥주 (the Korean word for beer).

Tbh bhai, I’m a big fan of fried chicken and tried a recipe at home as well - Simple Fried Chicken. Obviously it won’t taste like a restaurant dish but you might like it. I wish they open their branches in Pakistan or I shall get a chance to visit your place in the near future ;)… I can be your guest bhai if you to hehe

The key to Korean fried chicken is the texture of the sauce and the tenderness of the chicken itself.

I’d share a photo but I haven’t any REALLY good ones recently :sob:  . Those look fantastic @StephenAbraham and I’m glad you had the chance to try them. I love Korean Fried Chicken but haven’t had it in so long. The batter and the way they fry it is unmatched. And I can really appreciate the style of this restaurant and their presentation. Now I need to find and have some soon :joy:
