Kojagiri Purnima – The Night of Prosperity, Celebration, and Tradition

Kojagiri Purnima, celebrated on the full moon of the Ashwin month according to the Hindu calendar, is one of the most beautiful nights of the Sharad (autumn) season. On this night, the moon shines in its full glory, spreading calm and serene light across the earth.

Let the moonlight of Kojagiri fill your life with peace and prosperity.:crescent_moon:

It is believed that on this night, Goddess Lakshmi visits the Earth and asks, “Who is awake?” Whoever remains awake and worships her with devotion receives her blessings of wealth, prosperity, and health — hence the name Kojagiri Purnima.

People engage in several traditional practices:

Moonlight Sweet Milk (Kheer/Milk with spices and sugar): Placed under the moonlight and later consumed, believed to bring health, wealth, and prosperity.

"Drink the light, feel the peace".

Night Vigil (Jagaran): Devotees stay awake throughout the night, singing bhajans, chanting mantras, and sometimes enjoying local music and dance performances.
Harvest Rituals: In rural areas, grains and crops are offered to deities to ensure agricultural prosperity and abundance.

Cultural Gatherings: Families and communities come together on rooftops, terraces, or courtyards to celebrate with songs, stories, and joyful social interaction.

Sharad Navratri / Sharad Mahotsav: In some regions, the conclusion of Navratri celebrations coincides with this full moon night, marking the grand finale of devotional and cultural events.

Kartik Poornima / Kartik Snan (in Northern India): People take holy baths in sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, or Godavari, offering prayers for health and spiritual merit ,also the people lightning diyas in temple areas.

Moon Worship (Chandra Puja): Especially in North India, devotees perform rituals and prayers to the moon, believing it brings health, well-being, and prosperity.

"On this blessed night, may the moonlight bring health, happiness, and harmony." :dizzy:

Beautifully captured @Supriyadevkar ! Kojagiri Purnima is indeed a night of devotion and tradition. From moonlit kheer to vibrant cultural gatherings, it’s a celebration of prosperity and community. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into our rich heritage!

That’s a great post @Supriyadevkar Ji, especially I liked the 5th image of the diyas. It’s awesome, thanks for posting. :star_struck:

Here in my place this celebration is not practised. In my region Jagharn is observed during Shivratri and Vaikunta Ekadasi only. This is a new concept to me. On full moon days Satyanarayana Swami Pooja is observed in the evenings. Today I am planning to visit beach as usual..
