Kiribati: A nation of coral atolls at major risk of climate change impacts

Kiribati, population ~100,000, is a nation of many islands that spans across the Pacific ocean. The islands were formed by coral reefs and are often a small strip of land surrounding a central lagoon. In most cases, the land is no more than 4 meters above sea level and a forecasted 1 meter rise in sea level will be devastating for many of the islands. In recent years Kiribati has suffered from storm surge and sea level rise. The images below will give you an idea about the challenges that Kiribati will face in the years to come.

Thank you for sharing about Kiribati, @Nick-Hobgood . I am so happy to read this post. Even if I didn’t had the opportunity for visiting the islands yet, Kiribati have crossed my life twice, this year.

The first time it was at “Biennale the Venezia”, where we was for a conference about the environment.

The second time, most recently, it was during a research about Plastic Pollution, discovering in Kiribati a different meaning of the accumulation of plastic

Thank you for sharing

Hi @IlankovanT - I have underwater photography from Timor-Leste, Haiti, Papua New Guinea and Fiji but none from Kiribati. I was unable to find tanks or dive equipment on my visits there. My portfolio in this link on Flickr has a number of underwater photos in it, if you are interested. Fiji is especially rich in soft corals.
