Ketoprak (Javanese: Kethoprak) is a theatrical genre of Java featuring actors who may also sing to the accompaniment of the gamelan. It draws its stories from Javanese history and romances and in this differs from “Wayang Wong” (English: Human Puppet), which shares with “Wayang Kulit” (English: Shadow Puppet) a repertoire drawn from the Hindu epics Mahabarata and Ramayana, as well as from “Ludruk” which uses contemporary settings and the three-walled Srimulat (a famous and legendary Javanese comedy group in Indonesia), which specializes in vampire stories.
Ketoprak troupes might own or rent a performance building, such as “Ketoprak Srimulat” that used to be performed in a theatre both in Jakarta and Surabaya, back in the early 1980’s until early 1990’s, or troupes might travel through villages. The travelling Ketoprak troupe is called “Ketoprak Tobong”, also known as “Ketoprak Tonil”. And it might be considered as common people theatrical tradition in Java, especially in the Eastern and Central part of Java.
The show were performed in certain period in an empty plain near a village and moved from one place to another, in fashion similar to western travelling circus. In this travelling troupe, the performers and staffs also brought show properties, such as costumes, stage decorations, chairs, gamelan, sound systems, diesel electric power generator, all were contained in a portable building that also used as set or stage called “Tobong”. During their journey, they also living in this “Tobong”.
Unfortunately, due to the penetration of modern era media (internet, social media and television) that offers various means of entertainments, the Ketoprak shows is now rarely held. I were happen to have the opportunity to pictured the Ketoprak “Krido Budoyo”, of Wado village, Blora Regency of Central Java, Indonesia.

Kalau di tempatku ketoprak & ludruk berbeda @YulianusLadung meski menampilkan cerita sama. Ketoprak pemerannya campuran, ada pria & wanita. Sedangkan ludruk umumnya pemerannya pria semua (transgender). Eh…

Hahaa…

Thank you for sharing this story with us! I think many Local Guides will find your post interesting and I am glad you are sharing part of Indonesian culture here on Connect.
It is indeed sad knowing that nowadays we don’t see much of the traditional performance anymore, but I hope by sharing it as you did could attract the more people to fall in love with our culture and tradition.
